Coaches,

Today, we focus on the fourth of seven newly inducted NHSBCA Hall of Fame Members for the class of 2024. Mike Woods is the only baseball coach Chandler, Arizona’s Hamilton High School has ever known. He started coaching as a freshman baseball coach at Anderson Junior High in Chandler for nine seasons (1987-1998). In 1998, he moved across town to the newly opened Hamilton High School. And there he stayed, coaching the nine-time state tournament-winning Huskies for 26 years and counting. He built his program on high standards and accountability. He demanded that his athletes play hard, compete, and be good teammates.

Under Woods, Hamilton has piled up its nine Arizona big school state titles in three different decades (2003, 2004, 2008, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2019, 2022, 2023), and finished runner-up three times (2005, 2009, 2011). The team reached the semi-finals 16 times and appeared in the state tournament for 22 consecutive years. The Huskies have won 11 regional crowns and three 14-U Babe Ruth World Series titles (2007, 2009, 2019). With Woods at the helm, Hamilton has won 74% of its games with a record of 579-209.
As Coach Woods likes to say, "Players win games. Coaches do not." Five of his players have made the major leagues, 32 have been drafted or played professionally, 52 have played at D1 schools, and over 130 have played collegiately. His dedicated and loyal staff includes volunteer coaches, JV and freshmen coaches, and a nucleus of long-time assistants who have generously supported his coaching efforts from the beginning.

Coach Woods was inducted into the Chandler Sports Hall of Fame in 2018. As a result of his teams’ successes, he has received many Coach of the Year honors, including being named the AZBCA Coach of the Year three times (2003, 2004, 2011), the ACA Coach of the Year in 2004, the ABCA Region 7 Coach of the Year (2008, 2011). He has been Region Coach of the Year multiple times. He has served as Chairman of the AZBCA Hall of Fame committee as a board member, focused on rankings and All-Star Selections, since 2003.

Mike Woods retired from teaching in 2021 but continues to coach the Huskies. None of these achievements could have been accomplished without the support of his wife Ellen, of 33 years, and two children, Chelsea and Connor. They are proud of his impact on the lives of so many players and families in the community and his part in helping young men realize they can be a part of something bigger than themselves.
