Autumn 2020
Welcome to NIAB Focus - our regular round-up of research, news, events and solutions from the UK's leading crop science organisation.
NIAB RESEARCH DELIVERS 18 FOLD RETURN
An independent assessment of the value of research taking place at crop science organisation NIAB has revealed an 18-fold return on investment to the wider UK economy - through improved production efficiency, economic growth, import substitution, export earnings and inward investment.
BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE
NIAB in 2020 and beyond
Over the past few years NIAB has undergone many changes and developments, not only in
staff and infrastructure, but also its activities. These developments demonstrate NIAB’s continuing commitment to the future of the agricultural and horticultural sectors and, with
the lack of face-to-face events and activities this year where we normally catch-up, get updated
on NIAB’s current actions and future plans.
CROP SCIENCE CENTRE OPENS FOR BUSINESS
An alliance between the University of Cambridge’s Department of Plant Sciences and NIAB, the new Crop Science Centre is designed to fast-track technologies to sustainably improve farmers’ yields worldwide. Formally launched in October 2020, it is based at NIAB's HQ site in Cambridge and will serve as a global hub for crop science research and a centre for collaborations with research partners around the world.

A PLACE TO GROW
Barn4 opens for tenants in Spring 2021
Start-up agritech businesses will have access to new work and research facilities, alongside business support opportunities, with the development of Barn4, a purpose-built facility at NIAB Park Farm, on the outskirts of Cambridge.
SEED: THE START OF SOMETHING
Where it all began
NIAB's Margaret Wallace explains how seed has been at the core of NIAB’s business since it was established in 1919. But seed production began long before NIAB was established. A UK plant breeding and seed production industry existed by the end of the 19th century. The industry governed itself, some opting for a voluntary scheme organised by members of the trade. NIAB’s eventual founder, Sir Lawrence Weaver, was instrumental in the passing of the Testing of Seeds Order 1917 and a seed testing station was set up within the civil service.
CROP SCIENCE KEY TO CLIMATE CHANGE RESPONSE
Finding solutions to the challenges
Climate change is undoubtedly one of the greatest challenges facing our generation, with huge implications for the food, water, energy nexus which sustains life on earth.

Tackling the causes and effects of climate change is increasing the focus and importance of NIAB’s research, at all stages of the crop improvement pipeline writes NIAB CEO Dr Tina Barsby.
Open for business - technical & commercial services
NIAB provides independent agronomy and science-based technical and commercial services to government, the seeds industry and the wider agricultural and horticultural industries including:
Molecular diagnostics service
NIAB has launched a new molecular diagnostics service on becoming a partner of the AgriTech Centre Crop Health and Protection (CHAP) NIAB will host the new service at its Cambridge site, for use by researchers in both commercial and academic organisations.
