History of the Scholarship Award
Aurie Gosnell once said, “I had a dream, and that dream came true—and is still happening.”
As the first appointed President of NIC in 1968, Aurie envisioned something bold: a truly national cosmetology examination that would unite states across the country through one shared standard of excellence.
In 1969, she brought this dream to the NIC conference in Hawaii. Thirteen states immediately recognized the power of her vision and joined her in supporting a national testing program. With determination and collaboration, Aurie partnered with the Psychological Testing Corporation of New York and Milady Publishing Company—and in 1970, the very first national cosmetology exam was born.
That spark grew into the strong, respected national organization we are today.
Aurie continued to shape NIC for decades, earning the title of Coordinator of Testing Emeritus in 2002 and serving as a lifetime member who generously shared her wisdom with the NIC Executive Board and the Members. Her leadership, passion, and unwavering belief in elevating the profession continue to inspire us.
