New face at Workforce Training | |
We are excited to announce our New Executive Director of Workforce and Economic Development Colby Mattila.
Hello, I am Colby Mattila. I am an Idaho native who grew up in Wallace, Idaho, where I graduated high school in 1997. I earned my bachelor of science in technology education from the University of Idaho and later went back and completed my master’s in education leadership.
My journey as an educator began teaching at the high school level. I taught Construction at Post Falls High School for 11 years. During this time, I realized that industry and education make a perfect partnership. I set up a meaningful partnership with Habitat for Humanity and my construction classes where we would build homes for families in need. This was mutually beneficial by giving my students the experience they needed and Habitat got hundreds of volunteer hours.
In 2013, I joined the team at Kootenai Technical Education Campus (KTEC) teaching the construction program and in August 2016 I was named the Director at KTEC. Being the Director at KTEC allowed me to meet with industry leaders and help shape the program offerings to give local students a jump start on their future careers. Throughout my career, I have strongly advocated for Career and Technical Education as an indispensable component of our educational system. Believing that all students benefit immensely from real-world experiences, I was passionate about providing industry exposure to students at KTEC.
In my new role as Executive Director of Workforce Training, I am excited to continue partnering with industry professionals to provide them with qualified employees. These programs are essential to both our community and individuals by providing skills that lead to viable career opportunities. I am looking forward to continuing the essential work of NIC’s Workforce Training Center and working with local industry to add additional programs to meet their needs.
Please join us in extending a warm welcome to Colby!

Summer work schedule options for staff
NIC supports employees in balancing their personal lives with their work commitments. In support of this balance, we are encouraging alternate summer work schedules for staff, where the department can support them.
Earlier this year the policy and procedure on Alternate Work Schedules were updated, supporting schedule flexibility.
While alternate work schedules can be worked year-round, a lighter student presence during the summer may allow for greater flexibility, while still providing a high-quality student experience and supporting educational opportunities. Summer alternate schedule options are intended to provide employees in staff positions more opportunity to take advantage of longer daylight hours, warmer weather and summer breaks for students of all ages.
More details are available in the Alternate Work Schedules Guideline on the HR portal. Interested employees should discuss options with their supervisor.
