Bed in Summer

By Robert Louis Stevenson

In winter I get up at night

And dress by yellow candle-light.

In summer, quite the other way,

I have to go to bed by day.

I have to go to bed and see

The birds still hopping on the tree,

Or hear the grown-up people's feet

Still going past me in the street.

And does it not seem hard to you,

When all the sky is clear and blue,

And I should like so much to play,

To have to go to bed by day?

WooHoo Summer

is Here!

Although Summer isn't here officially until this Sunday, the PAC requested permission from Gov. Green to unofficially launch tonite. And though we did not receive a response, we interpreted that to be YES! So on behalf of all the sun-seekers, feel free to wear shorts to the PAC!

Our Summer Look-Back Author is Robert Louis Stevenson. And though the selected poem isn't all that Kauaian...he did write TREASURE ISLAND as well!

On February 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, which resulted in the establishment of internment camps for people of Japanese ancestry. Relocation centers were stationed throughout the country with several in Hawaiʻi on multiple islands. This film shares untold first-hand accounts of Hawaiʻi State residents and their experiences of being detained during World War II.

The Honouliulu National Historic Site preserves the largest and longest used incarceration site in Hawaii during WWII. Local Japanese were arrested right after December 7th and sent to camps here and on the continent. Kauai had three such sites as seen on the map below.

The one hour film will be followed by a live panel, including people held at the camps.
