Joy – Deep Down in the Heart

“The joy of the LORD is your strength.”   Nehemiah 8:10b

“I've got the joy, joy, joy, joy

Down in my heart (where?)

Down in my heart (where?)

Down in my heart

I've got the joy, joy, joy, joy

Down in my heart (where?)

Down in my heart to stay.”

by the Wonder Kids

Do you remember singing this song? I love it and the tune often pops into my head which gets me humming. To me, the tune and lyrics just shout “joy!”

I am sure you have seen this acronym:

J – Jesus first

O – Others second

Y – You third

For such a tiny word, there are some big messages communicated. Each day is a new opportunity to share the joy that we have in our heart because we are held by Jesus. Nehemiah “hit the nail on the head.” No matter what, the Lord is our strength. In good or bad, happiness or sadness, challenges or successes, strength comes from God and gives us the reason to be filled with joy. As forgiven and redeemed children of God, we live joyfully! Joy does not depend on circumstances, but His connection to you. So, do we keep the joy we have buried? No. Let the joy shine throughout your life and give it away!

Praise and thanks to God for His great love for us to send His Son to save us.

As we place our faith and trust in God, we can all be thankful that God holds us in the palm of His hand and gives us what He knows is best for us. So, as we walk through changes in our lives, step back and know God’s plan is perfect. Stay in the Word. Take care of yourself to be Well. Use your words and life as a Witness

Lois Stewart

“Stop, Look, Ask, Go” is a free online training for early childhood educators on food allergies. Unit 1 provides a general overview of food allergies. Unit 2 provides an analysis of allergies and practical applications. Unit 3 is tips for educators to navigate food allergies in the classroom.

This free training was developed as a result of Elijah’s Law and is on the preferred list of trainings for DCFS. It works better in Chrome and is endorsed by CFAAR: The Center for Food Allergy and Asthma Research, part of the Institute for Public Health and Medicine (IPHAM) at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. See link below.

Worker Retirement

Although it seems early to think about this, I request that school administrators inform me if there are any staff members indicating that they will be retiring at the close of the 2022-2023 school year. School administrators, please also let me know if you are retiring at the end of the year. Send me a quick email to lois.stewart@nidlcms.org or call me at the NID office (708-223-3110). Many thanks for thinking ahead.

SHINE! in the NID

It was so wonderful to see so many schools participate in SHINE! from April 14-23, 2023. To God be the glory for the servant hearts.

Hearts for Jesus

The “Hearts for Jesus” focus this school year will be the Mercy House that has been dedicated in Belize. The children will have a new space for eating their lunch when at school, dental and doctor offices, and more. Please prayerfully consider what your part will be in blessing this work in Belize and see many photos below of the ministry being done in Belize. Your contribution to “Hearts for Jesus” may be submitted by check payable to the Northern Illinois District (memo to “Hearts for Jesus”). Mail the check to:

Save the Date for Back-to-School Worship - August 9, 2023

Plan ahead for the 2023-2024 school year. All administrators are highly encouraged to put this date (August 9, 2023) on their 2023-2024 calendars so members of your faculty and staff have it. What a fantastic way to start the school year (worship, fellowship, and a lot of energy) together with fellow workers in the NID. We are excited to share that the host congregation will be St. Peter, Arlington Heights. We will be uplifted and energized by our keynote speaker Mychal Thom, the Chief Diversity Officer from Concordia University, St. Paul, Minnesota. Watch for details in the future.

Educator Conference - October 6, 2023

Save the date of Friday, October 6, 2023 for the next NID Educator Conference. We are really looking forward to bringing educators together for a day of worship, learning, and fellowship. It has been a long time since we have gathered in conference. All NID teachers, administrators, and Parish Professionals will receive registration information in the future. We would also love to have pastors join us for the day. We are thankful to St. Peter Lutheran Church and School in Arlington Heights for welcoming the NID onto their campus for the day.

Illinois State Administrator Conference

We are very excited to announce that the Illinois LCMS State Administrator’s Conference is being revived! Administrators from the three Districts will join together for a conference from July 17-18, 2023. It will be hosted here in the NID, and we are looking forward to welcoming fellow principals to this event. Please keep this in prayer as the planning continues.

TEC21

TEC21 Workshop Program

Time on your side … we’re still onboarding teachers + A WOW SCREENCAST

Screencast by Nathan Doell, a two-time TEC21 participant from

St. Martin Lutheran School, Clintonville, Wisconsin

Greetings, friends in Christ!

We continue to work behind the scenes to develop Season 15 cohorts and we’re connecting with you as we can to discern your interest for joining them. Please, if you have plans to participate, take a moment to register if you haven’t already. While you have plenty of time from now through the summer to put names to the spots you hold with just your (principal’s) name when you register, it helps us more than you know to understand which cohorts are filling and which have too few participants. Thank you for your attention to this!

Principals, I am routinely copied on the reports our TEC21 facilitators send to their teachers as a follow-up to the month’s workshop program. Here’s one from March:

Now that you are all green screen experts, I expect your schools will be asking for promo videos in your spare time! I know you left today with some good resources you can use. Don't forget to try out Vocaroo for an easy way to have your students read or explain a project.

It brings me so much joy to read these reports and see the responses that come through from many of our participating principals. Thank you for your affirmation and special thanks to those of you who share TEC21 news with your principal counterparts!

If you ever wondered what you could share about TEC21 to encourage a teacher on your faculty to participate, here’s what we hope you might say:

The TEC21 professional development series of monthly sessions—called the TEC21 Workshop Program—begins in September 2023 and ends in April 2024 (with the exception of December). TEC21 walks alongside Lutheran school teachers as they learn about and implement technology tools to enhance what they do. The Workshop Program engages teachers in a fun, safe, and uplifting environment as they consider new ideas and challenge each other to try new things. The Workshop Program is spread out over the entire school year to support ongoing development in thinking and technology implementation.

And if you want 10 minutes of complete affirmation for participation in TEC21, watch a Celebration Day 2022 screencast video from Nathan Doell, a returning TEC21 participant from St. Martin’s in Minnesota. Nathan’s journey using 3D printers, Canva, paper slide videos, and more is a huge testimony for the vision and mission of the TEC21 Workshop Program. Wow! Nathan, I hung on to every word.

Thank you, principals, for your support! Sign up now here for one of our virtual cohorts, a CUNE face-to-face faculty cohort, or one of 30 traditional, face-to-face, multiple grade-level cohorts impacting EC-12.

If you’d like a peek inside the TEC21 community or have questions, I invite you to schedule a video chat here. I’d love the opportunity to show you how the Workshop Program gives Lutheran school teachers the gift of time to examine, question, evaluate, and understand technology and develop practical applications for their classrooms. We are told every month by participants that they are refreshed spiritually, mentally, emotionally, and intellectually. Just ask Nathan.
