Issue 3 I November 4, 2024 | |
|
With the NYIFT and CNJIFT 2024-2025 program year off to a strong start, we would like to step back from our usual highlighting of monthly events to let our members know about the Section’s on-going commitment to the next generation of food scientists.
The New York Section and Central New Jersey subsection put considerable resources towards both the Rutgers University Food Science Program and Montclair State University’s Foods and Nutrition Program. Part of our commitment to these programs is financial.
Expenditures for Suppliers’ Day and Program Events are critical to our ongoing purpose as a professional organization. However, one third of the Section’s annual expenses are in support of students through scholarships and other stipends. This is our investment in the future of IFT as a global organization.
Just as important as our financial commitment to scholarship is our ongoing working relationship with students and faculty at both Rutgers and Montclair State. This occurs at an official level with student representation on our executive committee and unofficially as individual participants in university events.
Recently, Debbie Levine, Joe Light, and Marc Meyers (all active NYIFT and CNJIFT members) presented talks on the lifetime benefits of IFT membership, Section IFT membership, as well as the ongoing career value of a degree in Food Science for Rutgers undergraduate and graduate students.
Viral Shulka (President of the IFT Student Association [IFTSA]) added current perspectives with an overview of the IFTSA. The response from the students was very positive and we are sure that the experience was equally fulfilling for Debbie, Joe, Marc, and Viral as well.

GLP-1 Weight Loss Medications -
Targeted Opportunities for the Food & Supplement Industries
November 19, 2024 5-8:30 PM
| |
|
The GLP-1 [glucagon-like peptide-1] medications phenomenon is expected to cover 10% of the global population and demand outpaces supply in many countries. The medically supported weight loss market is projected to reach up to $100 billion by 2030.
These weight loss and diabetes control medications should be looked at as an opportunity more than a threat to the Food Industry. This event will be a panel presentation of 4 speakers and a moderator followed by Q&A with the audience. Learn More.

Mr. Charles Feldberg, a former NYIFT member, passed away peacefully at home on September 6, 2024. He spent 35 years at CPC International/Best Food as Vice President for Health, Safety and Quality Assurance.
He was a noted industry expert on food regulation and safety who published a variety of technical papers; worked closely with several U.N. bodies including the Food and Agricultural Organization; and served as U.S. representative to the International Federation of Grocery Manufacturers Associations.
Mr. Feldberg was Chair of NYIFT in 1967-68 and Secretary of the Section in 1966-67. He was a Fellow of IFT. Mr. Feldberg encouraged everyone working at CPC International/Best Foods to become active in both the New York Section and at IFT on Committees and in Divisions.

Celebrating Connections
It would be hard to overstate the value of connection in our lives. It’s widely known, for example, that having a sense of connection enhances physical and mental well-being, and research has shown that it even increases productivity. The New York Section and Central New Jersey Subsection of IFT is one of 47 sections that connect, empower, and activate the global food system community, enabling members to build networks, share experiences, and foster innovation.
IFT President Christopher Daubert and two of IFT’s hundreds of section leaders reflected on some of the ways that their IFT section connections have supported their personal and professional growth in a recent President’s Message column featured in the October, 2024 issue of Food Technology magazine. We think you’ll find value in the thoughts they shared. Download Article
