Congratulations to the
Gilman Scholarship Award Recipients
|
|
Leonardo Villavicencio and Judith Obregon join Jose Alvarez (Fall 2020) in receiving the prestigious Gilman Scholarship this Spring. Leonardo and Judith will be traveling to Spain for their Gilman scholarship in the next year. Both students worked with NOVA’s Office of International Education and Sponsored Programs to receive guidance through the application process.
Any NOVA student has the opportunity to study abroad and to gain international academic experience, allowing them to be competitive with their university counterparts in the ever evolving and globalized job market. NOVA has an International Education & Sponsored Programs office that is dedicated to guiding students in their study abroad experiences.
“I am so grateful for the opportunity that the NOVA offers for all the students," says Judith. "Specifically, I am so grateful to Ms. Fernand, the Associate Director of International Education, who provided me the support during the process of my application. As a transfer student this experience has helped me to learn the importance of global competencies as a part of our global education. Her guide and message changed my perspective for my professional career, and for this reason I decided to forge a global professional profile, and I found the way to complete this goal.”
“I got an email from Gilman saying that I was a recipient," says Leonardo. "So I was filled with excitement after my confirmation. This is the first time I won something I applied and worked for. I felt like I really accomplished something. I worked with Leeza Fernand in this. She helped me a lot with the entire process. She’s really great. I recommend her to anyone.”
The Gilman Scholarship targets students who have been historically underrepresented in education abroad, including but not limited to first-generation college students, students in STEM fields, ethnic minority students, students with disabilities, students attending HBCUs or other minority-serving institutions and students attending community colleges.
Watch for a NOVA press release announcement on Twitter and Facebook with more details soon.

NOVA partners with Generation Hope - a foundation that offers scholarships and programming for students who became parents in their teens. To learn about their resources click on “for students” here.
NOVA will soon be inviting students to apply for the Child Care Access Means Parents in Schools (CCAMPIS) grant, which provides funds to help student parents pay the fees associated with childcare. 50 grants will be distributed. Click here for more information.

Coming July 1: G3 at NOVA
|
|
As part of Governor Northam’s Get Skilled, Get a Job, Give Back (G3) initiative, many NOVA students may qualify for financial assistance beginning July 1.
For eligible students pursuing AAS, CERT, or CSC credit-based programs, G3 funding will be available for the Fall 2021 semester. For eligible students pursuing Fast Forward training via NOVA Workforce, G3 funding becomes available this summer for programs beginning July 1 or later. A full list of eligible programs is listed on the G3 Webpage.
Students who were previously funded by the REV (Re-Employing Virginians) program, but have exhausted their allotted REV aid, may be eligible for G3 and should reach out to G3 advising G3@nvcc.edu for assistance.
To access G3 funding, students must meet several criteria related to residency, income level, enrollment in an approved program, and completion of applicable financial aid applications. A detailed explanation of eligibility requirements can be found on the website.
Many of the G3 certificates and degrees are stackable, meaning programs start with quick skills training leading to a certificate with immediate value in the job market. If a credential or certificate is part of a larger associate degree, a student can begin working in their field (making money!) while continuing to take courses toward finishing the degree.
Questions regarding G3 eligibility and programs can be directed to G3@nvcc.edu.
