FAIRFAX, VA – During overnight hours on Monday, Feb. 19, Tuesday, Feb. 20, Monday, Feb. 26 and Tuesday, Feb. 27, the on-ramp from George Washington Memorial Parkway to I-495 South will be closed for drainage work related to the 495 NEXT project. Motorists are asked to follow the signed detour. This ramp closure and detour will be in effect between the hours of 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. on the dates listed above.
Motorists should follow the signed detour below, which crosses the American Legion Bridge into Maryland (see map):
- Take the George Washington Memorial Parkway exit to I-495 North toward Maryland.
- Continue north on I-495 to Exit 41 for Clara Barton Parkway.
- Stay left for westbound Clara Barton Parkway.
- Take the exit to Carderock. Turn left at the stop sign followed by another left to merge back onto eastbound Clara Barton Parkway.
- Continue on eastbound Clara Barton Parkway and follow the posted sign to exit and merge onto I-495 South toward Virginia.
In the event of inclement weather or other unforeseen delays, these closures will be rescheduled for the nights of Wednesday, Feb. 21, Thursday, Feb. 22, Wednesday, Feb. 28 and Thursday, Feb. 29.
Drivers are urged to use caution and expect potential delays if traveling through this area.
