Sanford Burnham Prebys scientist awarded $3.58 million NIH grant to advance potential treatment for opioid-use disorders
The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) awarded Anthony Pinkerton, Ph.D., a $3.58 million grant to advance a potential treatment for opioid-use disorders, called SBI-553. With this funding, Pinkerton will complete preclinical testing of the compound to ready it for study in humans. If this milestone is achieved, NIDA will grant an additional $6.3 million to complete a Phase 1 study that evaluates the compound's safety in healthy individuals.

New survival strategy for oxygen-starved pancreatic cancer cells

U.S. Congressman Mike Levin (D-CA) toured Sanford Burnham Prebys to learn about the innovative biomedical research taking place in San Diego. He
met with several faculty members who—thanks to federally funded research—are working to find treatments for Alzheimer’s disease, heart disorders, addictions and more. Shortly after his visit Levin introduced legislation that calls for a $10 billion investment in biomedical research.
