The Scholastic Book Fair was a great success, despite us losing a day of sales due to inclement weather.  The sale would not have been possible without parent volunteer, Kelli Burnham, for spearheading the event, and parent volunteers Justine Delise, Catherine Kriska, and Marcie Clare for volunteering their time to assist the children in selecting their books.

Thank you to all of the staff and parents who contributed to the IGHL St. Patrick's Day Chinese Auction raffle baskets.  We appreciate your donations and are grateful for your support.  The winner of the 50/50 raffle will be contacted by 3/14.

Keep your eye out for Easter chocolates and cookies being sold at the front desk, handmade by a student's nanny!  A portion of the proceeds of each chocolate sold will go back to NIS, so you can eat it guilt-free!

Please mark your calendars with all of the exciting events we have planned in the coming months.  We hope to see you at IGHL for the Corned Beef and Cabbage Dinner on 3/11, at McGuire's Comedy Club  on 4/7, and our Golf Outing on 7/11.  We are always in need of sponsors and items to be raffled off at our events. Please ask your hairdresser, place of employment, and restaurants if they are willing to donate raffle prizes, gift certificates or sponsor us.  We appreciate your involvement thus far.

Speech-Language Therapy and Pet Pals Program
Thanks to the funding generated through NIS's annual golf outing, we've been able to expand our animal assisted therapy program, named Pet Pals.  NIS Speech Therapists are now working with a group of select students, all of whom enjoy working with Katrina, NIS's Animal-Assisted Therapy handler, and her beautiful pups. We are seeing the students respond nicely to the dogs. Studies have shown that working with animals helps increase attention span and motivation, as kids are more engaged and can stay focused longer. Their motivation level increases for activities that keep them interactive with the dogs. We are observing that some of the children are more vocal during sessions, show more affect, and are more motivated to use sounds, words and PECS to choose activities. Some of the activities include brushing the dogs, playing fetch, dressing them, giving the dog commands, greeting the dog, putting necklaces on them, feeding them, walking them, etc... During these activities the children are following directions, vocalizing, verbalizing, expanding their utterances, utilizing PECS, requesting recurrence (more), greeting,  making eye contact and improving joint attention with adults and the dogs...So far, so good!!!
