Johnstone_ Andrew.jpg

Jefferson Health, a primary care practice in Marlton, New Jersey, is rethinking how they treat their patients with opioid use disorders (OUD) thanks to the Providers Clinical Support System (PCSS) Implementation project.

PCSS Implementation provides training and mentorship in creating systems and implementation guidance, as well as educational resources and support at no cost to healthcare professionals and organizations in evidence-based practices in the prevention and treatment of substance use disorders, particularly opioid use disorder.

In 2020, the practice began participating in the PCSS Implementation project and quickly learned that treating OUD is more about harm reduction than following rigid policies, says Andrew Johnstone, APN, FNP, MSN, BC, who spearheaded the clinic’s transition to treating more of their patients with medications for OUD (MOUD). National Suicide Prevention Lifeline

In July 2022, a National Suicide Prevention Lifeline will make crisis services more accessible with the adoption of 988 as the easy to remember three-digit dialing, texting, and chat code for anyone experiencing a suicidal or mental health related crisis. As the U.S-based universal dialing code connecting to the existing National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (Lifeline)—a network of local crisis centers throughout the country—988 will increase the accessibility and use of life-saving interventions and resources.
