Letter from the Executive Director
It only takes one award to be an award winning company.
Well, it's official. Fall begins tomorrow. The days will get shorter and the nights will be longer as the cooler weather starts to set in.
Although the beginning of fall usually denotes the start of leaf clean-ups, with the current drought in full swing, trees are in distress, causing their leaves to drop prematurely this year. This makes weekly maintenance a bit more difficult and adds a little more work to those of you who are submitting entries to this year's
Landscape Achievement Awards which are due October 15th.
Speaking of the Achievement Awards, we are extremely excited to announce that we have just inked a deal with TownSquare Media to partner with them at The New Jersey Flower and Garden Show in Edison, NJ to be held on February 11th - 14th. This means that winning companies will have the opportunity to build a life size garden at the show, receive discounts on booth space, get VIP tickets for their friends, family and customers, plus much more.
In addition to leaves, awards and the flower show, the beginning of fall also signifies that our
Landscape Industry Certification Exam is just around the corner and will be held at Bergen Community College on Saturday, October 10th. Being Landscape Industry Certified shows your commitment to the industry and tells clients that you and your employees are a cut above the rest. Sign up for the Maintenance or Installation Exam right now and start preparing. If you are certified, we'd love you to be a judge and help others achieve this same level of professionalism. Lastly, we always need help on set-up day, which is the day before the exam, Friday October 9th.
Have a great week!
Sincerely,
Jody Shilan
Executive Director

Member Meeting Recap: Gamka Sales Co!
If ever there were a night to come to our meeting at Gamka Sales, last Thursday was the night! The weather was gorgeous, the homemade barbecue, salads, beans and more were outstanding, and everyone was up for the racing and chainsaw challenges!
When the sun went down, and everyone had had their fill of food and competition, Ron Faraci of Gatic gave a basic rundown on the best uses and applications of drainage.
Captain Safety was oddly missing from the evening, but Bob Hibler was there to make us feel at ease!
Finally, after some homemade cookies and coffee, the winners were announced. Sadly, I (Gail) came in 4th in the Chainsaw Competition and didn't rank in the races, but some of our great members did win! Pat Donovan came in first on the Mower Races and won a brand new Husqvarna Backpack Blower. Bill Kloos of BKS Lawn Service came in first (beating out Al D - sorry Al) on the chainsaw challenge and went home with a Husqvarna Chainsaw!
But no one went home empty-handed, as Gamka had hats, shirts and keychains (plus some amazing sales, which you may still be able to cash in on :)) for everyone in attendance. Thank you to Gamka for another great meeting and everyone who came out last Thursday.

Make the most of your mowers
Proper maintenance will improve the life of any piece of equipment, especially pieces like mowers that get a workout day in and day out. Here are five tips to help you get the most out of your small engines.
1) Put maintenance on a schedule.
Scheduling regular service and keeping track of it is one of the most important things you can do to keep your mowers in top shape. Spending a few minutes to inspect equipment each day can save a lot of money and headaches down the road.

For landscaping companies, websites rule
Websites are a crucial part of the landscaping business. Your company's website is most likely the first thing potential customers will encounter and sets the tone for whether they'll want to hire you. So what do you do if you're still getting your business off the ground and don't want to pay a professional to create a website for you? Or maybe you only trust yourself to get the job done right. In either case, the fact remains that you need a website - and sooner rather than later.

The Myth of Fall Tree Trimming
Pruning and trimming seem to go hand-in-hand with fall cleanup. Bare, straggly branches may seem unsightly, but resisting the urge to prune them is the best option to keep trees and bushes healthy.
Shayne Newman of Northern Connecticut's YardApes, Inc., who serves on the board of directors for the National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP) and is landscape industry certified, advises that pruning-happy landscapers should put down the pruners and wait.
