A Leadership Journey: Working Towards Equity, Inclusion, and Cultural and Linguistic Competence

As a young, bilingual Special Education teacher working with children with disabilities and Special Health Care Needs, Wendy Jones became painfully aware of the disparities in treatment of children from households of lower socioeconomic status and limited English proficiency. Moved to address discrimination, she pursued a Masters in Social Work degree at the University of Maryland. Her field placement at the Georgetown Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (LEND) provided her with a career path to address disparities and inequities. As a LEND fellow, through research and data analysis, Ms. Jones contributed to the development of the Georgetown University National Center on Cultural Competence, where she now serves as Senior Policy Associate.
