MEDIA OUTREACH FOCUSED ON STATE ENERGY MASTER PLAN
A new phase of NJPGA’s public education campaign has begun with direct outreach to New Jersey media outlets. This new phase follows the campaign’s My Jersey Freedom outdoor and online advertising placements that appeared earlier this year.
As part of the media outreach campaign, an Op-Ed (opinion-editorial) feature has been written to inform consumers about features of New Jersey’s Energy Master Plan which would mandate residents’ and businesses’ conversions to electricity as their primary energy source. Out of concern for climate change, the policy would push consumers away from propane, natural gas or fuel oil, notwithstanding costly equipment and substantially higher operating costs.
The opinion piece highlights cost comparisons and informs consumers that their energy choices will be eliminated, to guard against climate change and preserve the environment from fossil fuels. In direct contacts with New Jersey journalists, NJPGA member Mike Taylor of Combined Energy Services in Newton, NJ, will be available for press comments on the Master Plan, its costs and limited choices. Taylor’s by-line also appears on the Op-Ed feature.
The state Board of Public Utilities and Department of Environmental Protection have not disclosed the Master Plan’s prospective costs for consumers or restricted choices. A cost study is expected in July.
At a recent business forum attended by NJPGA member Mike Santiago of Blue Flame Energy Services of Newfield, NJ, BPU and DEP leaders insisted that prospective, though undisclosed, consumer costs are necessary and justified to prevent serious effects from further climate change.
At the same forum, a member of a panel of utility executives noted that about 75 percent of New Jersey homes use natural gas as a primary energy source. He warned that eliminating gas as a primary fuel source would be “catastrophic for the state economy.”
The consumer education and media campaign is sponsored by NJPGA and the New Jersey Propane Education & Research Foundation.
