The NEW JERSEY PROPANE GAS ASSOCIATION along with the NEW JERSEY PROPANE EDUCATION & RESEARCH FOUNDATION launched a statewide propane awareness campaign at the beginning of February to continue to raise our voice and assert our commitment to reducing emissions while providing access to reliable, green safe, affordable energy for all; an awareness that started with last year's Energy for Everyone campaign, in partnership with PERC, spreading consumer awareness of the environmental benefits of propane.
Our current PROPANE IS JERSEY FREEDOM campaign gives us an opportunity to strengthen our message locally that propane is a clean versatile energy and will continue to be a key part in providing New Jersey consumers reliable energy.
The strategy of this campaign is to target consumers in specific counties using three digital tactics branded with the new PROPANE IS JERSEY FREEDOM messaging. These tactics: Broadcast Radio (30 second ad on regular rotation on New Jersey 101.5), banner ads (on top-tier websites) and a Billboard (Exit 7 of the New Jersey Turnpike).
Users that click on the ads are brought to the campaign landing page where they can learn more about propane as reliable, green, safe and affordable energy for their home and business.
By visiting MyJerseyFreedom.com you can support the campaign in your own communications and outreach today to help you grow your business and keep your customers safe by showing users that propane truly is Jersey Freedom. Visit...

NPGA Legislative Alert
BPU and DEP Testimony from Senate Environment
On February 10th, the Senate Environment and Energy Committee met to hear testimony from the Board of Public Utilities (BPU) and the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) on the impacts of climate change in New Jersey, and what actions the State is taking, and should take, to meet its goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Legislator Comments:
Chairman Bob Smith (D-17) said that today’s testimony will help the Committee with future legislation. He also said that:
- Rutgers University and Princeton University have been invited to share similar testimony in the coming weeks; and
- The DEP should provide projections on EV sales because manufacturers have shown a commitment to increasing the production of EVs.
Vice-Chair Linda Greenstein (D-14) asked the DEP how it will ensure New Jersey utilities are fully aligned with the transition to clean energy, including decarbonization of the electric and building sectors, enhancing energy efficiency, modernizing the electric grid, and supporting electric vehicles (EV). She also asked:
- If the DEP considered any of its goals as unattainable.
Testimony from Invited Guests:
President Joseph L. Fiordaliso, Board of Public Utilities, said that the State is taking actionable steps to address climate change under Governor Phil Murphy’s (D) leadership. He also said that:
- The BPU takes seriously the need to keep energy costs affordable for all the New Jersey residents;
- Bringing down the cost of clean energy is a focus of the BPU;
- The fight against climate change cannot be separated from the issues of energy affordability;
- The BPU continually assess and reassess the best way to deliver economic, climate and local health benefits to the residents of our state over last decade;
- Billions of dollars in damage and economic loss have resulted from the increase in major storms since 2011;
- Investments in infrastructure have been effective in lessening the effects of these storms;
- Reducing the occurrence and duration of outages is a goal of the BPU;
- The BPU does not enact any program without first knowing the financial impact on the rate;
- Every offshore wind solicitation award has included the ratepayer impact;
- Some of these numbers are estimated because they depend on market forces which cannot be predicted with 100% accuracy;
- Cost estimates are known and made public before action is taken by the BPU;
- The BPU is more than halfway to meeting the Governor Murphy’s (D) offshore wind goal of 7,500 megawatts by 2035 program, creating 7,000 high paying jobs and an estimated $4.7 billion in economic activity;
- More than a million homes will be powered by renewable wind energy;
- New Jersey is leading the way on modernizing the electric grid to deliver all that power to New Jersey customers in an affordable and environmentally friendly way;
- Offshore program is the centerpiece of the State’s clean energy revolution;
- New Jersey is the number one state for installed solar per square mile;
- Solar reforms from the Clean Energy Act (2018) are significantly lowering the cost of solar without diminishing the participation;
- The BPU created the Office of Clean Energy Equity to ensure every New Jersey resident can participate in the energy revolution regardless of income or location;
- Environmental justice is a primary goal of the BPU;
- 40 percent of New Jersey’s carbon emissions come from transportation;
- Incentives are designed to support the industry as it matures; and
- Incentives are removed once the industry no longer needs it.
Commissioner Shawn M. LaTourette, New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, said that DEP serves the Legislature as its science agency to support development of legislation. He also said that:
- New Jersey’s sea level is expected to rise two feet by 2050;
- The State’s climate policy is to reduce emissions of greenhouse emissions and respond to climate change by preparing for changes;
- The State plans to offer incentives to encourage market transformation and force changes through supportive regulator reform;
- The State’s net admission are roughly 90 million metric tons;
- Net admissions need to be brought down to around 20 million metric tons;
- The transportation sector is the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions;
- A culture change is necessary to make the changes required to address climate change;
- The DEP held a hearing last week to present its five rules to reduce admissions by 8 million metric tons of carbon;
- Reducing emissions from electric generating units are limited by the federal Clean Air Act and state Air Pollution Control Act;
- These regulations are very technology driven and not driven by climate imperatives, but the DEP can force them in a particular direction;
- A focus is on addressing cargo handling equipment because dirty ports are harming the health of residents in overwhelmingly minority black and brown residents;
- The DEP is considering instituting a cap on carbon emissions;
- Building products are a large source of greenhouse gasses; and
- There is a plan on the priority of issues with transportation sector being the number one issue.
