The Value and Impact of Your Work

As we continue to advocate, communicate, and educate to advance the profession and improve eye health and vision care for New Jersey residents, we’re focusing on raising public awareness of the important work you do and the positive impact you have on your patients. By fostering understanding and respect for optometry, we can build stronger support, inspire informed decisions, and enhance practices that benefit both the profession and the community.

Seeking Examples of Access to Care Challenges

As we continue our discussions with New Jersey legislators to highlight advancements in the profession, we aim to provide examples of access to care challenges in our state, particularly regarding laser procedures outlined in our scope expansion legislation (A-920/S-354). We know the patients are out there, and we need your help gathering their stories!

Below are some examples that have been shared with us. If you can identify patients who are willing to share their stories, our PR team will reach out to the individuals for more information. Stories will be reviewed for use in various communications. Please share information with Keira Boertzel-Smith at kboertzel-smith@njsop.org.

“I had to wait a month and travel 60 minutes round-trip for my first appointment with the ophthalmologist. My 95-year-old mom lives with me so I had to find someone to stay with her every time I had an appointment. I would have liked to have been able to have my optometrist perform the procedure.” -Passaic County Resident

“My time is worth money. I can’t afford to take time off for extra appointments. If optometrists in other states can perform these procedures, why can’t mine?” -South Jersey Small Business Owner
