April Chapter Meeting: The Connected Home

Johannes Ochsner of BSH Home Appliances led attendees through an insightful presentation on smart appliances and the multitude of features they stand to offer the user at our April Chapter Meeting at the B/S/H/ Design & Experience Center in the A&D Building. From diagnostics to modern convenience, we learned about the evolution of smart products for the home and what lies ahead for future development and implementation. The evening continued with a demonstration of Home Connect products, complete with Alexa ordering a double espresso from the built-in coffee machine across the room. President's Column | Toni Sabatino
As a designer I think there are so many good goals for design. Creating spaces that make us comfortable, using materials that are environmentally sensitive, innovating products that make life easier to manage and of course the artful beauty aspect of it. But where do we get the knowledge to bring innovative new things to our clientele? Where do distributors find the products to seize the market share, and how quick is our market to embrace change? These thoughts are inspired by my recent visit with DesignHounds to Salone del Mobile in Milan. The sheer magnitude of the show, encompassing an entire city, really, is a mind blow. The products and their presentations are mind expanding and thought provoking, but what does it all really mean to us here at the NKBA Manhattan? For me, seeing the influence of other cultures, of European design and innovation entering our New York market is a natural. Our market demands chic, artful, luxurious products that transcend trends while standing the test of time.
Vladamir Kagan was an innovator in modern furniture design quite some time ago, and the showroom is still open here in NYC. It will be interesting to see if the trends for modern unfitted kitchen furniture exhibited in Milan, but certainly not new there, will catch on here and migrate to middle America.
It was also interesting to see the beautiful wood of Team 7 integrated throughout a kitchen display as wall cladding, very much like that which the uber-wealthy Oscar Langstraat character on “Billions” has in his home. “Mad Men” spiked the sale of freestanding bar cabinets. Will pop culture guide the next generation to this organic modernism style of integrated everything in the future? I think so. It will be interesting to see.

Americans in Milan
and the Global Launch Pad

Salone del Mobile and EuroCucina FTK kicked off in Milan last month, bringing the global design industry together to experience the biennial expo. According to NKBA Executive Vice President, Industry Relations & Chief Strategy Officer Suzie Williford, “The world has become so much smaller, with the rapid evolution of technology and instantaneous global communication. This opportunity to promote awareness of the NKBA on an international scale is a great way to build connections with companies around the world, show them how to leverage the buying power of the vibrant North American market, as well as expose our members to new ideas that they can explore as they build their own businesses.”
NKBA Manhattan Chapter President Toni Sabatino and Programs Chair Dawn DeLuca were part of the global mix for cocktails, light bites and industry remarks that included Williford, NKBA CEO Bill Darcy, Chairman of the Board Lorenzo Marquez, and Brian Pagel, senior vice president of Emerald Expositions.
NKBA and KBIS presented “Global Launch Pad at EuroCucina” in the Team 7 booth at the show on April 18.
Sabatino and DeLuca also attended Salone del Mobile, covering the greater design show as well as EuroCucina. Their participation was part of the DesignHounds, a digital community network of design experts, and part of Modenus Media.
Prior to EuroCucina, Sabatino and DeLuca were the guests of Rohl at Lago D'Orta for brand bonding and factory tours. Read more about Sabatino's take on the experience here.
The NKBA “Americans in Milan” party, co-hosted by Cosentino and Liebherr and held at The Diner by David Rockwell on April 19, was another opportunity to mix and mingle with kitchen and bath enthusiasts from across the globe.
NKBA Manhattan Treasurer Felicitas Oefelein and Committee Member Beata Galdi toured the EuroCucina show and visited Chapter sponsors. They were particularly impressed with the focus on fresh produce preservation found in some of the appliance booths. Pictures can be found on the NKBA Manhattan Facebook page
