Special to NKyTribune  General Sidney Sherman was more than a soldier from Newport, Kentucky. He was an innovator in industry, instrumental in bringing new manufacturing practices to Newport and Cincinnati. His impact was crucial to industrialization of the area, helping it to shed its frontier reputation.

People with diabetes should get annual eye exams -- it's very possible that vision loss can be preventable

People with diabetes are at increased risk of developing serious eye diseases, yet most do not have sight-saving annual eye exams, according to a large study.
The Kentucky Academy of Eye Physicians and Surgeons joins the  American Academy of Ophthalmology in reiterating the importance of eye exams.  Researchers at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia have found that more than half of patients with the disease skip these exams.

NKU confers 1,300 degrees in December commencement, begin 'next chapter of their lives'

Northern Kentucky University wrapped up the Fall Semester and honored nearly 1,300 students at its 47th Commencement exercises Saturday at BB&T Arena.
NKU held two ceremonies for students in the College of Arts and Sciences, the Haile/US Bank College of Business, the College of Education, the College of Health and Human Services, and the College of Informatics.

Coast Guard report says mate asleep at the switch caused barge crash at Ludlow Bromley Yacht Club

NKyTribune staff  The U.S. Coast Guard has issued a statement regarding the collision of the towing vessel DALE ARTIGUE with the Ludlow Bromley Yacht Club.
The statement issued by Lt. Jim Brendel, Supervisor U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment Cincinnati indicates the Mate on-watch fell asleep while at the controls. There were two deckhands on-watch at the time,

By Keith Taylor Kentucky Today  Kentucky coach John Calipari would match Ashton Hagans against any point guard in the nation.  "He's so far advanced," Calipari said after Hagans scored 21 points to lead the No. 8 Wildcats to a 67-53 win over Georgia Tech Saturday. "There may be better point guards out there. I'd have to watch closely. I mean, the way he is playing -- that he's starting to master his skills."
