In 2010, NLADA created and bestowed its first Lifetime Achievement Award, the Justice John Paul Stevens Award , to honor not only Justice Stevens and his distinguished career, but also his steadfast dedication to equality.

This award honors a person who has committed his or her life to the fair administration of justice for all people regardless of race, color, creed or income, demonstrated an exemplary commitment to equal justice and whose life and professional accomplishments serve as an inspiration to the entire legal profession.

Other recipients include Justices Stephen Breyer and Ruth Bader Ginsburg and f ormer Attorney General of the United States Eric Holder.

As NLADA said in its statement, Justice Stevens..."wrote some crucial landmark decisions, such as Tennessee v Lane , protecting access to courthouses for people with disabilities, Atkins v.
