Corporate Leaders Support
Full Funding of LSC

On May 25, Members of Congress received a letter signed by general counsel from 207 of the largest corporations in America - including several members of NLADA's Corporate Advisory Committee - urging them to provide a substantial increase in the budget for the Legal Services Corporation (LSC) for FY2022.

General counsel from a wide range of companies and industries are represented on the letter, including Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Entergy, Amazon, Visa and many more of America’s most recognizable corporations.

The signatories point to the exponentially increased need for legal services due to the myriad of challenges created by the pandemic including higher unemployment, domestic violence and housing issues while at the same time, higher rates of unemployment, particularly for people of color and for women, grew the population of eligible clients. This is placing a greater burden on organizations that were already unable to assist every person requesting assistance. Read the letter here.

Leadership for Lasting Change: Perspectives on Racial Equality

Last month, NLADA hosted Leadership for Lasting Change:
Perspectives on Racial Equity, a digital discussion featuring a panel of several key public defense stakeholders. Our panelists engaged in a deep discussion about the racial disparities that persist at various stages of the criminal legal system, reflected on the past year and looked ahead to ongoing efforts to center race and racial equity in pretrial. In addition, we launched our new digital portal: Leadership for Lasting Change, a resource for defender leaders and criminal legal system stakeholders to promote transformational leadership. This new portal will be regularly updated with news, publications and policy briefs, learning modules and toolkits, videos and podcasts. Click here to learn more and explore the site.

Client Advocates and Leaders Alike Doing Work in the Community

Client advocates are a fundamental part of our community, as their lived experiences provide an essential perspective. Our client members are always hard at work. Catherine Harris is one such woman. Also known as “Grandmother Love,” she is the architect behind Grandparents Raising Grandchildren (GRG), a forum that advocates for low-income families in need of legal services in Massachusetts. The forum was created to educate and empower all grandparents raising grandchildren to share their unique challenges regarding mental health and healing closure along with ways to improve legislation with community leaders, stakeholders and policymakers. Read her full story here.
