NLLD Board of Commissioners President Cory Kief and Executive Director Dwayne Bourgeois joined South Lafourche and Terrebonne levee district reps for a meeting with
Congressman Steve Scalise on Friday, June 14 to discuss the latest developments in the push for reform and long-term authorization of the
National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).
After multiple Congressional extensions, the current NFIP is set to expire September 30, 2019. The U.S. House of Representatives Financial Services Committee passed a resolution last week to authorize the program with some of the reforms sought by NLLD and other local officials. The resolution is expected to be considered by the full House in upcoming weeks.
FEMA is also expected to issue new flood insurance maps this summer that will incorporate locally built flood protection in the maps to better project an area's flood risk. These maps are used to set insurance premiums. Lafourche was one of 25 communities to participate in FEMA's pilot program to develop maps that recognize local flood protection efforts that are not federally accredited.
