NLTA EXECUTIVE NOTES

December 6, 2024

Your Provincial Executive met in St. John’s on December 6, 2024. Executive Notes is a summary of discussions and decisions that occurred at these meetings.

President’s Report

Since the last meeting of Provincial Executive, the President has participated in several events and attended meetings in his capacity as President, including a Teacher Recruitment and Retention Committee meeting, an Education Accord NL Advisory meeting and chaired a meeting of the School Safety Coalition. President Langdon also participated in the Kids Eat Smart Radiothon and a mini-conference at the Faculty of Education. The President gave several media interviews on the Association’s “Not Okay” campaign, including appearing on the national program CTV Your Morning, as well as interviews on the NLSchools proposed policy on cell phones. President Langdon brought greetings to the RNUNL convention to congratulate them on their 50th anniversary and visited striking CUPW postal workers. The full President’s report is available here.

Association Priorities

Updates on the NLTA Priorities for 2023-25 were provided to the Provincial Executive and Branch Presidents for review, questions and comment. The priorities are: Workload Concerns; Membership Well-being and Protection; Collective Bargaining and Services for Members; Retention, Recruitment and Resources; and, Advocacy on and Response to Government Initiatives. Business from Standing Committees

Table Officers

· The 2025-27 schedule of meeting dates for Table Officers, Provincial Executive, and Joint Council was approved.

· Grace Hollett will be the recipient of the Patricia Cowan Award and Steve Brooks will be the recipient of the NLTA Honorary Member Award at BGM 2025.

Communications/Political Action/Membership Engagement Committee

· Education Week 2025 will take place March 24-28, 2025, with the theme Adventure in Learning/Apprendre: une aventure!

· The NLTA will explore the creation of a mobile app that serves the purpose of information sharing including, but not limited to, relevant information/ announcements, education on programs and services, and information on membership opportunities.

Professional Issues Committee

The following policy changes have been approved:

· III. Professional Development, P. Professional Development Programs, #2A: I, VI were amended.

Membership Benefits and Services Committee

· The NLTA will lobby the Employers, Department of Education, and Memorial University to establish a committee to increase the number of teachers working in the province.

· The Association will lobby the Employers and Department of Education to offer recruitment incentives for hard to fill positions and incentives to retain teachers who already hold positions at schools where those hard to fill positions exist.

· The NLTA will lobby the Employers and the Department of Education to offer incentives to new teachers to work in NL.

· The Association will lobby the Employers to repost all unfilled permanent and term positions until they are filled, regardless of duration.

Other Business

· The NLTA Collective Bargaining Committee will consider, for inclusion in the next round of opening proposals, a leave in lieu clause for all extra curricular participation.

· The NLTA Collective Bargaining Committee will consider, for inclusion in the opening proposals for the next round of negotiations, two paid PL days (one closeout day and one at the discretion of the substitute) per school year for substitute teachers in the school of their choice.
