NLTA EXECUTIVE NOTES

February 29 - March 1, 2024

Your Provincial Executive met in St. John’s on February 29 followed by a Joint Council Meeting on March 1. Executive Notes is a summary of decisions and discussions that occurred during these meetings.

President’s Report

Since the last meeting of Provincial Executive, the President participated in several events and attended meetings in his capacity as President, including meeting with government officials regarding the Education Accord NL and a meeting of the School Safety Coalition. President Langdon also participated in the proclamation signing for Education Week 2024, as well as several media interviews discussing the Education Accord NL. The full President’s Report is available here.

Business from Standing Committees

Table Officers

  • The NLTA will create a Membership Benevolent Grants fund, to take effect in the 2024-25 school year.
  • The NLTA will donate $2,500 to the Memorial University Primary/Elementary Graduation Gala Class of 2024. 
  • The NLTA will support the Royal Canadian Legion NL Command – 24th Veterans Service Recognition Book with the purchase of an advertisement.

Membership Benefits and Services Committee

  • The NLTA will award Craig Hicks, Krista Houlihan and Gord King the 2023-24 Bancroft Award.
  • Petra Snook will be awarded the 2023-24 NLTA Special Recognition Award.
  • Five Pre-Retirement Seminars will be held during the Fall of 2024 in the following locations: Deer Lake, Gander, and three in St. John’s. The dates and sites will be announced at a later date.

Discussion Topics

Association Priorities

Updates on the NLTA Priorities for 2023-25 were provided to the Provincial Executive and Branch Presidents for review, questions and comment. The priorities are: Workload Concerns; Membership Well-being and Protection; Collective Bargaining and Services for Members; Retention, Recruitment and Resources; and, Advocacy on and Response to Government Initiatives. The Association priorities are available here.

Advisory Motions

The following advisory motion was carried by Joint Council and will be considered by Provincial Executive:


That the NLTA lobby NLSchools to advertise vacant positions until they are filled.

Project Overseas Update

Members of Joint Council heard a presentation from Kristie St. Croix, the most recent NLTA participant in Project Overseas. Project Overseas is sponsored by the Canadian Teachers’ Federation and its affiliates to assist teachers in developing countries upgrade their teaching qualifications. Each year the NLTA sponsors one member to participate in this program. Application forms are available on the NLTA website in the fall of each year with the deadline falling in early November.
