NLTA EXECUTIVE NOTES

October 31 - November 2, 2024

Your Provincial Executive met in St. John’s on October 31 followed by a Joint Council Meeting on November 1-2. Executive Notes is a summary of discussions and decisions that occurred at these meetings.

President’s Report

Since the last meeting of Provincial Executive, the President participated in several events and attended meetings in his capacity as President, including attending a Teacher Recruitment and Retention Committee Meeting and a Teacher Allocation Review Committee Meeting. President Langdon also participated in two Branch Leadership Seminars and attended several SIC events, as well as several media interviews focused on school violence. Business from Standing Committees

Table Officers

· The NLTA will donate $7,500 to support the 2024-25 programming of the Kids Eat Smart Foundation NL.

Curriculum Committee

The following policy changes have been approved:

· III. Professional Development, B. Curriculum, #11 was amended.

· III. Professional Development, L. Interventions, #2C and #2F were amended.

· III. Professional Development, M. Multiage, #8 and #13 were amended.

Communications/Political Action/Membership Engagement Committee

The theme for the NLTA Biennial General Meeting, taking place April 22-25, 2025, will be Fighting for Change

Provincial Executive Update

Due to a vacancy on Provincial Executive, Stephanie Drover-Edmunds, as second alternate, will serve on Provincial Executive for the period of October 31, 2024 – December 31, 2024.

Association Priorities

Updates on the NLTA Priorities for 2023-25 were provided to the Provincial Executive and Branch Presidents for review, questions and comment. The priorities are: Workload Concerns; Membership Well-being and Protection; Collective Bargaining and Services for Members; Retention, Recruitment and Resources; and, Advocacy on and Response to Government Initiatives. Advisory Motions

The following advisory motion was carried by Joint Council and will be considered by Provincial Executive:

· That the NLTA consider, in the next round of negotiations, two paid PL days (one closeout day and one at the discretion of the substitute) per school year for substitute teachers in the school of their choice.

Policy Changes Since March 2024

Joint Council approved a number of changes in NLTA policy. These policies provide direction for continuity of decisions and guidelines to those who take positions on behalf of the Association. The amended policies include: NLTA Scholarships and Awards to Students, Curriculum, Interventions, and Multiage Classrooms.

Province-wide Vote

Joint Council was given information on the process for the upcoming electronic Province-Wide Vote for President and Vice-President. The election for President will take place November 25-29, 2024, and the election for Vice-President will take place December 9-13, 2024. Information related to the election can be found here.

Other Business

The following topics were reviewed and discussed by Joint Council: lack of behaviour supports in schools; recent insurance plan changes; sick notes/sick time; Jordan’s Principle positions; Rycor; PASS equivalent in primary/elementary; and lack of quality Professional Learning.
