NLTA EXECUTIVE NOTES

Your Provincial Executive met in St. John’s on September 20, 2024. Executive Notes is a summary of discussions and decisions that occurred at this meeting.

President’s Report

Since the last meeting of Provincial Executive, the President has participated in several events and attended meetings in his capacity as President, including meetings related to the Education Accord, meetings of the Teacher Recruitment and Retention Committee, and the CTF Annual General Meeting. President Langdon also participated in the Janeway Telethon as well as a number of Branch retirement dinners. The President gave several media interviews on various topics, including the end of the school year, teacher payroll issues, cell phones in schools, teacher shortages, and back to school issues. Association Priorities

Updates on the NLTA Priorities for 2023-25 were provided to the Provincial Executive for review, questions and comment. The priorities are: Workload Concerns; Membership Well-being and Protection; Collective Bargaining and Services for Members; Retention, Recruitment and Resources; and, Advocacy on and Response to Government Initiatives. The Association priorities are available here.

Business from Standing Committees

Table Officers

· The NLTA will donate $2,500 to Sharing Our Cultures to support their 2024-25 programming.

· The NLTA will provide $2,000 to the Provincial Student Leadership Conference, being held in October 2024 at St. Paul’s Intermediate in Gander.

· The NLTA will continue its support and sponsorship of Media Literacy Week with a $5,000 donation to MediaSmarts.

· The NLTA will support the Citizen Crime Prevention Association of NL through the purchase of an advertisement in the upcoming Children’s Internet Safety Guide.

· NLTA will increase the amount of its annual scholarship program for dependents of active, retired, disabled or deceased members to $1,500, as well as adding one scholarship for a dependant of a current, retired, disabled or deceased Association staff member.

NLTA Membership Benevolent Grant

The application for the NLTA Membership Benevolent Grant is now accessible on the NLTA website for members who qualify. The purpose is to provide limited financial assistance to active NLTA members who are facing extraordinary circumstances in which they have no income from salary/wages on a long-term basis and have no or very limited access to other financial coverage or protection through other sources. If approved by NLTA Table Officers, the maximum amount of any one Benevolent Grant shall not exceed two thousand dollars ($2,000). Active Members of the Association may be eligible for a Benevolent Grant once in any five-year period, regardless of the amount granted. Executive Motions

The following motions were carried by Provincial Executive:

· The NLTA will consider sending representatives to Nain to discuss the present staffing shortage and its impact on student programming.

· The NLTA will lobby government to make a final and standing decision on the status of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in respect of the school calendar.

· In the next round of bargaining, the NLTA will consider including in opening proposals clearer contract language around the usage of the terms “bonus” and “allowance.”

Discussion Topics

The following topics were reviewed and discussed by Provincial Executive: school bussing; Administrator workload; “Student Choice” in relation to junior high curriculum changes; impact of vacant positions; and recruitment and retention of French teachers.
