NL Workforce Innovation Centre (NLWIC) staff continued to foster stakeholder and community engagement by actively participating in events throughout Newfoundland and Labrador to cultivate collaborations that drive innovative and impactful workforce development initiatives.
The recent MUN/Grenfell Centre for Aging Planning and Priorities Session held on November 15-16th was a pivotal event for fostering collaboration on research priorities and partnerships that directly impact our aging workforce. Director Sharon McLennon represented NLWIC by sharing valuable insights from the NLWIC-funded research project Working Better with Age: Research on Barriers and Opportunities to Workforce Participation for Older Workers in Newfoundland and Labrador completed in 2022, which emphasized the need to address the unique challenges faced by older workers and solutions to address those challenges in Newfoundland and Labrador. By collaborating with the St. John's Board of Trade and integrating findings from the Regional Workforce Development Committee’s action plan projects, NLWIC is committed to creating effective strategies that not only support older workers but also stimulate provincial economic development and growth. This engagement underscores NLWIC's dedication to enhancing workforce development through meaningful partnerships and informed research and innovation initiatives.
NLWIC's Stakeholder Engagement Coordinator Susanne Dawe enjoyed diving into the world of community engagement with Navigate Small Business and special guest Dr. Julie Pitcher Giles on November 20th for an enlightening and interactive Business Wings 2.0 Social Engagement Strategy session. Tailored specifically for small businesses, attendees were guided through the essential steps of developing an effective engagement strategy to build meaningful relationships within the community, learning how to enhance and strengthen brand image, and optimizing resources for greater impact.
As the holiday season approaches, the NLWIC team had the pleasure of attending NLOWE’s Holiday Reception and Dinner - Western Region at the Glynmill Inn on November 21st. The festive gathering was a wonderful opportunity to connect with fellow colleagues and inspiring local women business owners. It was the perfect occasion to celebrate our collective achievements, strengthen our commitment to fostering a diverse workforce in Newfoundland and Labrador, and celebrate the spirit of collaboration and community.

the Dais's CanStudyUS Fellowship Program Develops Youth Leadership | |
|
The CanStudyUS Home and Away Fellowship, made possible by staff of the Dais at Toronto Metropolitan University, provides knowledge and skills-based education in a new way through a U.S. study tour to learn about policy and policymaking. A total of 20 dedicated young Canadian leaders made up of professionals from the private and public sectors, students and recent graduates, were given the opportunity to develop a better understanding of Canada-U.S. relations by visiting four U.S. states – Detroit, Ann Arbor, Akon, and Pittsburgh - just a few weeks before the U.S. November election.
This leadership program reflects the need for creating direct learning opportunities that can challenge preconceptions and deepen understanding of the wider world and our place within it. It also highlights the crucial role that experts, community leaders, and academics play in influencing public policies and ensures Canada's future policy leaders have a strong understanding of the relationship the country has with its closest neighbour.

Like the iconic iceberg, there’s more beneath the surface to see and understand when it comes to the NL Workforce Innovation Centre (NLWIC) and the workforce innovators in Newfoundland and Labrador who engage in research and innovation projects.
Established in 2017 by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and administered by College of the North Atlantic, NL Workforce Innovation Centre (NLWIC) has a provincial mandate to provide a coordinated, central point of access to engage all labour market stakeholders about challenges, opportunities and best practices in workforce development.
NLWIC’s goal is to promote the research, testing and sharing of ideas and models of innovation in workforce development that will positively impact employability, employment and entrepreneurship within the province’s labour force and particularly underrepresented groups. Funding for NLWIC is provided by the Department of Immigration, Population Growth and Skills (IPGS) under the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Labour Market Development Agreement.
