Fires Rage On, So Do Relief Efforts
New Mexico is seeing a number of fires this season with devasting effects on rural, tribal, and some more populated counties. Due to mandatory evacuations, many families and community members are displaced. The Emergency Action Fund will provide support to organizations providing shelter, meals, clothing, and other necessities to those who have short- and long-term recovery needs. We are partnering with a number of private businesses, community partners, and generous donors like you to fundraise in an effort to help victims in need of fire relief services.

Our Community Engagement Manager Stephanie Santillanes had the opportunity to visit the United Way of Lea County and help develop their Shared Purpose effort.
"It was such an impactful and wonderful experience," said Stephanie. "I had the opportunity to meet with their Mayor and state representatives. As well as many corporate and community partners to discuss and facilitate conversations on how a Shared Purpose could help move the needle when it comes to making a difference in their community."
Becca Titus, President and CEO of United Way of Lea County stated, "Stephanie was truly a blessing to have facilitated the Shared Purpose conversations. She could see why we are all so passionate about Lea County."

2022 Choose Your Own Future Challenge Recap
Featured images are from Choose Your Own Future participants
United Way of Central New Mexico’s second annual Choose Your Own Future challenge united donors, community organizations, and participants of all ages in over 30 activities geared toward college and career readiness. Word of the virtual challenge spread to 231 registrants across three counties and 24 schools!
Kris Degenhardt, Director of Adult Education with Gordon Bernell Charter School, praised the initiative saying, “One of my students didn’t see herself attending college before this. She attended the tour of CNM that was organized through the challenge and can now envision herself as a student on campus there!”
An exciting addition to the challenge this year was the “Change the World” activity which invited participants to propose a new service project, or expansion of a current service project, that would fill a need in their community. United Way staff and community partners are making plans to support these community-driven projects in the coming months.
31 participants successfully completed the challenge earning a gift card reward. Those who participated in the virtual events also received raffle prizes courtesy of Explora and the Isotopes. Generous contributions from community members, Young Leaders Society as well as funds from the Nickoloff Foundation and Meta made the challenge possible.
