It's application season. Are your mentees prepared?
We all can recall the application-season-induced anxiety and insomnia we endured as 4th-year medical students. Well, believe it or not, applying to dermatology is harder than ever. The average applicant has at least 15 publications (or something just as ridiculous). While some programs such as the Howard University Department of Dermatology are turning the tides so students may enjoy their short 4 years of medical school again, the rest of us need to help the students.

Here are the ways you can help:
1) become an NMA Derm mentor
2) join this Sunday's journal club hosted by NMA Derm Past Chair Dr. Valerie Callender and NMA Derm Research Director Dr. Hope Mitchell as they refresh our memories on the best practices for writing case reports. This will help you when we ask you to provide cases for mentees.
3) host an Nth Dimensions Scholar this summer at your practice
4) join the NMA Derm Advocacy Committee

On another note, look out for the NEW NMA Derm OBSERVERSHIP Program. I was inspired with this idea after Dr. Sharon Belmo of London, England and Dr. Hope Mitchell of Toledo,Ohio visited my practice last week. Let's all learn from each other! We will announce the launch in the near future.

Finally, have you missed a newsletter? We will continue to post past newsletters on our webpage, www.nmaderm.org.

Looking forward to seeing you all this spring at the AAD and this summer at the NMA meetings!

Guest: Dr. Valerie Callender

NMA Derm research committee is excited to present its first monthly journal club THIS Sunday. If you are looking to strengthen your skills in writing case reports, then this is the journal club for you! Looking forward to seeing you and even your mentees there!

Meeting ID: 854 9975 2418
While not required, it is preferred that you read these two case reports below prior to the journal club. Click the articles to download.

1) This summer allow a black 1st-year medical student to shadow you at your practice while the Nth Dimensions program takes care of everything else. This is a fulfilling project that strengthens the pipeline for NMA Derm.

Email [email protected] if interested.

2) If you have a 1st-year black medical student mentee, please share the application with them. The deadline is December 1.

3) To further support the dermatology pathway program, Nth Dimensions is currently recruiting/hiring personnel for
  • Associate Director of Clinical Education (part-time)
  • Program Coordinator
Dr. Hope Mitchell demonstrating a suturing techniques with Nth Dimensions scholars at the AAD Bioskills workshop at Howard University.
Dr. Chesahna Kindred teaching about the ABCDE's of melanoma and dermoscopy with Nth Dimensions scholars at the AAD Bioskills workshop at Howard University.
Yolanda Holmes, MD, FAAD
Director of NMA Derm Membership Committee
Why join/renew?
While you’re looking out for your patients’ lives, the NMA is looking out for your livelihood. The challenges you face as a black physician are staggering. Black physicians treat more black patients, more poor patients, and sicker patients than most other physicians. NMA is hard at work supporting your interests.

he NMA Dermatology Mentorship Committee was established to increase the representation of under-represented minorities in the field of dermatology. By connecting mentees with mentors we aim to engage, enlighten, and empower individuals on their development to advancing their career as a dermatologist through guidance on the application and interviewing process as well as professional development beyond residency training.

We love to have you sign up as a mentor by filling out the form!
This Thanksgiving, let's highlight our 4th-year NMA Derm Mentees!
