Celebrating Excellence: NMCUSD Staff Honored in Monterey County Classified School Employee of the Year Program

North Monterey County Unified School District is proud to recognize and celebrate three outstanding members of our team who have been honored through the Monterey County Classified School Employee of the Year Program.

Each year, the Monterey County Office of Education invites school districts to nominate classified staff members who demonstrate exceptional service, dedication, and commitment to students and school communities. All nominees are selected by their management teams based on their outstanding contributions.

We are thrilled to share that three of our own were selected as countywide winners in their respective categories:

Alma Perez

Paraprofessional Services

  • Alma has been a dedicated paraprofessional at NMCUSD for 12 years. Her care, patience, and unwavering support for students have made a lasting impact across our schools. We are proud to see her recognized for the vital role she plays in supporting student learning and inclusion.

Leticia Ramirez

Food and Nutrition Services

  • Leticia is a Child Nutrition Assistant 1 and has been with NMCUSD since 2013, helping to ensure our students are nourished and ready to learn each day. Her dedication to the health and well-being of our students is deeply appreciated and makes a difference in the daily lives of so many.

Juana Silva

Clerical and Administrative Services

  • With an incredible 28 years of service, Juana has been a steadfast and essential member of our district since 1996. As a Special Services Specialist, she has supported countless families and staff with professionalism and heart. Her years of hard work and commitment truly exemplify excellence.

Please join us in congratulating Alma, Leticia, and Juana on this well-deserved recognition. Your dedication does not go unnoticed, and we are so proud to have you as part of the NMCUSD family!

Celebrating PBIS & Mental Wellness Leadership at NMCUSD

We are proud to celebrate several shining examples of how our district is leading the way in creating positive and supportive school environments.

Elkhorn Elementary School’s Principal, Lorene Harvey, was recently recognized by the Monterey County Office of Education (MCOE) for her outstanding work in implementing Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) on campus. Her leadership has helped foster a culture of respect, responsibility, and safety, making Elkhorn a model for schools across the county.

North Monterey County High School was also honored with a county award for its innovative use of technology and PBIS to support school climate. A collaborative effort between the school’s COST team, students, and the Communications Department led to the creation of an informative video about the importance of the DESSA assessment—a tool that measures students’ social-emotional wellness. The assessment helps educators identify students who may need additional support before behavioral concerns arise, ensuring timely and compassionate intervention.

Echo Valley Elementary School was proudly represented at the awards ceremony as well. Principal Jacob Gile delivered a presentation highlighting the school’s creative approach to boosting student attendance—through high-energy "Glow Parties" that reward positive behavior and encourage students to come to school every day. His engaging presentation showcased how a little fun can go a long way in improving school culture and attendance rates.

Congratulations to all our schools and staff members who are making student wellness, engagement, and positive school culture a top priority. Your work is truly making a difference in the lives of our students and families.

Spring Break is Here: Enjoy, Relax, and Recharge!

Spring is in the air, and that means it’s time for a well-deserved break! All NMCUSD schools will be closed for Spring Break from Monday, April 14, through Friday, April 18, 2025. Classes will resume on Monday, April 21, 2025.

We encourage our students, families, and staff to take this time to relax, recharge, and enjoy quality moments with loved ones. Whether you're traveling, spending time outdoors, or simply unwinding at home, we hope you have a wonderful and refreshing break.

The district office will remain open during this time to support any families who may need assistance.

NMCUSD wishes everyone a happy, safe, and healthy Spring Break! We look forward to seeing you back, ready for a strong finish to the school year.

North Monterey County High School Senior Shines on Regional Student Panel

North Monterey County High School senior Brysma Ramirez represented the district with pride and poise as a panelist during the final Inflexion workshop of the year, held March 11, 2025. The event brought together California Community School Partnership Program (CCSPP) grantees from the northern region and featured a vibrant student-led component.

Ramirez was one of only three students from Monterey County selected to speak on the panel, where she shared her experiences and insights on what makes schools more supportive and effective for all students. Her selection was especially notable, as she currently serves as the Central Coast Region representative on the Statewide Student Advisory (SSA) Committee.

The SSA Committee is composed of 22 youth leaders from across California who are passionate about developing their leadership skills, strengthening their political awareness, and contributing to the advancement of Community Schools. Ramirez’s involvement in this prestigious group is a testament to her commitment to student voice and educational equity.

During the panel, students were asked thought-provoking questions such as, “What recommendations would you give to a teacher who has taught you?” and “What strategies do you think will help struggling students?” Ramirez responded with thoughtful reflections, offering powerful suggestions drawn from her own lived experience.

We are incredibly proud of Brysma for representing North Monterey County High School on such an important platform.

The SSA Committee opens nominations each August for the upcoming school year. This opportunity is available to students in grades 7 through 12. The Central Coast Regional Technical Assistance Center (RTAC) team will share the nomination form when it becomes available for the 2025–26 school year.

Echo Valley’s New All Hands on Deck DJ Program is Spinning Into Action!

Echo Valley Elementary is turning up the volume on student engagement with the launch of an exciting new program: the All Hands on Deck DJ Club! Still in its early stages, this unique enrichment opportunity is already making waves on campus, starting with a dedicated group of three pioneering students.

At the heart of the program is Echo Valley’s very own principal, Jacob Gile—better known in the DJ booth as DJ Teach. A passionate advocate for creativity and student voice, DJ Teach is teaching everything from beat-matching and mixing to music theory and performance skills.

The program wouldn’t be possible without the generous support of Numark, who provided the essential equipment to get things started: mixers, headphones, and all the tools the students need to start mixing like pros. With these professional-grade resources, the student djs are learning hands-on skills that could inspire future careers—or at the very least, bring serious fun to school events.

Though still in its beginning stages, the All Hands on Deck DJ Program has big plans on the horizon. The goal is to grow the program and give more students the chance to shine on the turntables.

This important survey gathers valuable insights into students' knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors related to factors that impact their learning, including truancy, safety, harassment, substance use, school connectedness, and learning supports. The information provided will help guide district and school efforts to promote safety, enhance learning supports, and improve student achievement.

Participation is voluntary, but it is crucial to the success of our district’s efforts. The data gathered will help guide NMCUSD in promoting safety, enhancing learning supports, improving student achievement, and addressing health risks that may hinder learning.

This survey is anonymous and designed to protect privacy. No one will be able to identify individuals based on their responses. Each of our NMCUSD school sites will send out consent forms in both English and Spanish.

We encourage all students, parents, and staff to participate in this valuable survey to help create a safer and more supportive learning environment for everyone. Your feedback is essential in shaping the future of education in NMCUSD.
