Businesses should let the New Mexico Chamber know when their workplace vaccination rate reaches at least 70%. SBA Opens Supplemental Grant Applications for Shuttered Venue Operators Grant Awardees

As of August 31, 2021, the U.S. Small Business Administration will begin sending invitations for supplemental awards for the Shuttered Venue Operators Grant program. Child Care Assistance Program Expanded as of August 1, 2021

Our NMHA Workforce Challenge Survey revealed that lack of adequate childcare is a challenge for people working or looking to return to work.

As of August 1, 2021 the State of New Mexico dramatically expanded its Child Care Assistance Program. Eligibility will be doubled from 200 percent of the federal poverty level to as much as 400 percent. This will provide much needed support for working families and for workers looking to return to work. The state also announced an increase in subsidy payments to providers which will help child care providers improve quality and expand service offerings around the state.

Please let your employees and potential new employees know about this important development. They can learn all about the upgraded program here.

in New Mexico -

Going back to the 1930's, the New Mexico Hotel Association has been the voice of the industry. The organization has decades of experience working with the industry, policy makers, and partners around the country to ensure that the needs of the industry are understood. Some of the key issues that we are currently working on include:

The Need for Increased Investment in Tourism Infrastructure and Marketing

Recognition of Tourism as an Economic Development Driver in New Mexico

Get involved with NMHA, and let us know what issues matter to you!

Ensuring Your Voice is Heard -
NMHA and members of our Government Affairs Committee hosted a dinner for the Legislative Finance Committee members at Taos Ski Valley on August 26. We wanted to make sure that they understood that while the hospitality & tourism industry is starting to recover, we still have work to do. Here are a few of the key points that we shared with the committee members:

New Mexico lags behind neighboring states when it comes to tourism marketing and investment in tourism infrastructure. We need to up our investment in marketing New Mexico as a tourism destination. Tourism marketing has a proven return on investment, and the industry will not fully recover without significant investment in marketing and promotion.

We are still dealing with hiring challenges. We need to develop and fund programs (Tourism focused LEDA Programs, Job Training, Job Recruitment, etc.) that focus on getting people back to work. Businesses cannot return to full capacity until they have a full workforce.

Continued state and local support is needed to rebuild the industry: get federal aid dollars out into the communities, invest in workforce development, promote small business development centers, help small business owners access available programs and funding sources, etc.

Tourism is economic development and it creates good paying jobs in both rural and urban communities. It leads to increased investment in the state which in turn leads to increased property taxes, GRT revenue, and corporate income tax revenue. Tourism also helps facilitate economic development and diversification of our economy by providing base services (restaurants, hotels, large events, small events, outdoor activities, concerts, tours, museums, etc.) that make NM a more attractive place to visit, live and ultimately locate businesses. In order to attract business to NM it needs to be a place people want to visit.
