BROTHERS AND SISTERS AS CAREGIVERS
AFFORDABLE HEALTH CARE ACT OPEN ENROLLMENT

Brothers and Sisters as Caregivers

Studies show that daughters provide more than twice as much care to their elderly parents than sons provide.  The study reports that daughters provide an average of 12.3 hours of care a month while sons provide 5.6 hours.  The study further shows that when there are both sons and daughters in a family, the daughters increase their care giving efforts while the sons reduce their responsibilities.

The importance of the study is significant when one considers that studies have shown there is a higher mental and physical health consequence, including a higher mortality rate, for people who provide care for elderly family members.  Care giving still remains an area where gender inequality remains.

Affordable Health Care Act Open Enrollment

If you enrolled in the Affordable Health Care Act in 2014 this is the time to review available plans for 2015.  You may change
your plan even if you received a notice that you will automatically be enrolled in your current plan for 2015
.  You have until February 15, 2015 to change plans.  However, if you are not enrolled in a plan or your insurance company has notified you that you will not be automatically re-enrolled, you must enroll by December 1, 2014 if you want to have coverage on January 1, 2015 no matter which health care plan you had in 2014.

Even if you are automatically re- enrolled, you must update your income and household information as soon as possible.  If you do not, you could miss out on 2015 savings you qualify for, wind up with the wrong plan, or have to pay back tax credits you did not qualify for when you pay your 2015 taxes.  The changes you must report include:

  • Changes to income
  • Birth or adoption
  • Divorce or separation
  • Death
  • A child on your policy turning 26
  • A dependent changing status so they are no longer your dependent
  • Someone in your household getting coverage from a public program like Medicaid, CHIP, or Medicare
  • Change of your permanent home address

These changes can be reported by telephone (1-800-318-2596) 24/7 or on-line through your Market Place Account.

Remember: You must enroll by December 15, 2014, in order to have coverage on January 1, 2015. All 2014 Marketplace plans end on December 31, 2014. This is true no matter when you enrolled.

Dear Ladies of NMP

I am a small business owner and am considering offering health insurance to my employees.  Must I still select a plan by December 15th?

No.  As a small business (50 or fewer employees) you can obtain health care coverage (medical and dental) through The Small Health Options Program ("SHOP") at any time.  There is no deadine to enroll in a plan.
