The Famous Company You've Never Heard Of
Thursday, September 26th 6:30 PM
|
Back by popular demand is Steven Jones (Bull's Bridge presentation) and Zac Mirecki will entertain and educate you with history about the Hartford Faience. Before the Art Deco style took hold of the country in the early 20th Century, art tiles came on the scene in the 1880s, and grew in popularity until the late 1910s. Many private homes and even public spaces were decorated in this new style.
One of the more famous art tile manufacturers was right here in Connecticut. Hartford Faience, which started as Atwood Faience in 1894, was born out of the Grueby style. Originally partners, William Grueby and Eugene Atwood began making art tiles in Boston in 1890. After a parting of the ways, Eugene Atwood opened his own tile manufacturing business in Hartford.
Hartford Faience had a national presence, and their tiles decorated many historic buildings and public spaces across the United States. However, as home décor styles changed in the 1910s, Hartford Faience ventured into the manufacture of electrical porcelain items as well. The demand for electrical porcelain gradually surpassed the art tile business, and Hartford Faience switched to exclusively producing electrical items from 1910 until their closure in 1992. Power line insulators were part of this mix.
Steve and Zac will be discussing the history of this unique company, and showing some examples of their work and locations where their tiles can still be seen.
