Tomorrow, tune into Ozomatli's Livestream on Instagram at 12pm! NMS will be represented with a special performance featuring NMS student Cesar Beltran and Teacher Gerardo! Exec. Director Karen Louis will share a bit about our school, and the upcoming scholarships! NMS at Idyllwild and Interlochen
We may still be working through a global pandemic, but that can't keep us down! Congrats to the NMS students who took part in virtual summer programming at our partner schools! Programs included Interlochen's violin program, and Idyllwild Arts Jazz in the Pines, Piano Performance, Composition, Vocal and choral performance, and Orchestra! Great job Takeshi, Elian, Matisse, Myles, Jacob, Yutae and Daniel!

We have two new scholarships! Both Scholarships will begin September 1st. the deadline to apply has been extended to August 16th!

1) Covid-19 Relief Scholarship: this is open to all new and existing students who have encountered personal and financial loss due to the pandemic. This is open to all instruments, all levels, and all ages. This is a 25%-90% Tuition Scholarship.

2) The Eric Cruz Memorial Scholarship in Drums: This scholarship is a full-scholarship for one year of instruction in Drums. The scholarship has been created by the Cruz family to honor Eric's passion, light and life.

For existing scholarship students: If you currently have a scholarship that you received in February, 2020 you DO NOT NEED TO AUDITION FOR A NEW SCHOLARSHIP. Your scholarship level will continue until February 2021. However, if you fit the criteria for these scholarships, as well, you are welcome to apply. New Ensemble Auditions: TBD
Beginning in September, 2020, students will not be charged for Ensemble lessons or participation!
Ensembles are open to every student, at every age. We will be sending out further Ensemble audition details with our scholarship details when we are closer to reopening! This is an exciting opportunity to open our Ensemble program to the full community, as well as explore multiple musical genres and ideas as a group.

Timeline for reopening:
COVID-19 icontinues to spread throughout Los Angeles, we have adjusted our timeline for reopening the school for lessons. Lessons are available online only until further notice. We hope to open the school for lessons soon, but this is dependent on the level of control and containment established in COVID-19 cases throughout LA County, and is subject to change. We continue to monitor the situation and are updated daily by the County and Department of Health. Melissa and Liz will continue to reach out to all parents and students who had been enrolled at the time of our initial closure to secure a schedule that fits both the teaching artists and the students online availability.

When you do return to NMS in person, the following policies and procedures will be in place. You can also watch this video!

Policies and procedures:

The following policies and procedures were created with guidance from and direction from City, County and State. If you are unable to comply with theses procedures, we encourage you to enjoy online lessons until the pandemic is under control.

  • All students must enter and exit through the back door.

  • Students may be accompanied by one adult to enter the building, if they require assistance getting to their classroom.

  • We will require all teaching artists and students to wear masks while at the school. This is for the physical and psychological health of all. Until there is a vaccine or successful treatment of COVID-19, we run the risk of infecting the vulnerable without these precautions in place.

  • Temperatures will be taken(with a digital, forehead thermometer) upon entering the school. If one is running a fever, they will be asked to return home immediately and seek medical advice.

  • Handwashing and sanitizing after using the restroom, and before touching an instrument, will be mandatory.

  • Maintaining a social distance of 6 feet or more with all staff, teaching artists and non-familial community is mandatory. Guests and parents are no longer able to observe classes from the inside of the classroom.

  • Indoor waiting areas will be largely off-limits. We will create seating outside, as much as we are able.

Timeline:
For the safety of the whole community, this timeline is subject to change, based on the trends and information regarding the spread ad containment of COVID-19 and recommendations of the County, Department of Health and City of Los Angeles.

  • July 7-20th: Schedules will be arranged and adjusted to serve both in-house(beginning August 17th, we hope) and online classes currently in session.
  • Week of July 13th: Scholarship and Ensemble details and descriptions will be made available. Please spread the word!
  • August 4-8th Scholarship and Ensemble Auditions. NMS will be closed for scholarship and ensemble auditions. If you are a current scholarship student, you do not need to audition again. Your scholarship has been moved forward into the next scholarship session. Details for auditioning will be included in an upcoming email!
  • August Virtual Recital: TBD. More details to come! we are arranging to host a virtual recital for our students who have been working and developing through the past few months.
  • Beginning August 17th, we are hopeful that we can begin to resume classes at the school. This, again, will be dependent on a number of factors including: Recommendations from the City, County and Dept. of Health, establishment of safety and sanitary procedures throughout the school, evidence of safety and limited spread throughout the city, as restrictions are released.
