Dear NMS families,
This week marks the beginning of the 11th week of closure here at NMS. This time has been personally, professionally and socially challenging between the overwhelming losses due to COVID-19, the effect of isolation an uncertainty on all of us, the need and fight for justice that is at a boiling point. It is all overwhelming. This time has also given us all an opportunity to adapt to new things: extended family time, virtual lessons, Showtime! online, virtual-everything. Our teaching artists have reported that, while challenging at the onset, the opportunity to be welcomed into our students homes has, by far, built a stronger perspective on the individual student, the music we all create, and the level of trust and development that we have all been building as artists. I'd like to thank the students who have shared their Showtime! performances since our last message: Alaya (x2), Keila, Kayden(x2), Kendrick, Stella, Logan, Jacob, Natalie, Ethan, Matteo, Benjamin, Clarissa, Sophia, Travis, Athena, Janry, Mark, Kara, Jesus, Lucie, Ruben, Grace and Alexis! Great job! Thank you for inspiring us and keeping us uplifted! To see these performances on one link, please visit our
Youtube page, or see them individually on our
Instagram or
Facebook pages(and subscribe)!
This time has also become of one of deep gratitude: for our first responders, our essential workers, our community and each other. The resilience and strength of our community is what will rise out of all of the uncertainty, chaos and unrest. In our 106 year we have done this before, and we will do it again!
Today's message will provide a projected timeline for reopening(subject to change), and some changes that we have made in order emerge from this stronger, more centered and safer for us all.
Changes:
Policies and procedures:
Following guidelines and direction from City, County and State,
- we will require all teaching artists and students to wear masks while at the school. This is for the physical and psychological health of all. Until there is a vaccine or successful treatment of COVID-19, we run the risk of infecting the vulnerable without these precautions in place.
- Temperatures will be taken(with a digital, forehead thermometer) upon entering the school. If one is running a fever, they will be asked to return home immediately and seek medical advice.
- Handwashing and sanitizing after using the restroom, and before touching an instrument, will be mandatory.
- Maintaining a social distance of 6 feet or more with all staff, teaching artists and non-familial community is mandatory.
- Indoor waiting areas will be largely off-limits. We will create seating outside, as much as we are able.
Ensembles:
When we return, Ensembles will not require a fee for participation. Ensemble participation will require an audition, which will be included during the Scholarship Week closure(projected dates: August 4th-8th).
By releasing the fee for Ensemble classes, it is our hope that more students will audition and participate in our Ensemble program.
Scholarships:
- If you were awarded a Scholarship in February, you will not need to audition again. Your scholarship will be upheld for the upcoming Scholarship period(September 2020- February 2021).
- Due to the severe financial impact COVID-19 has had on our families and community, we will be introducing a new scholarship level for families who suffered job reduction and/or loss during the past 6 months.
- We will hold scholarship auditions for families that were not eligible prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, but are now eligible because of job loss or reduction in response to COVID-19. We will provide more details on this at a later date, so please stay tuned!
Schedules:
- As much as we are able, we will try to keep the schedules of our students consistent with the Spring schedule. However, there may be some shifts that will need to be made, based on our occupancy allowance for reopening, room configuration, and teaching artist/student availability.
- During the month of June, staff will be determining what those influencing shifts are(rooms, teaching artist availability, occupancy guidelines) and reach out to you to determine the best fit.
- If you know that your scheduling requires a change when we reopen, please contact elizabeth@neighborhoodmusic.org so we can incorporate it into our larger schedule.
Online classes:
We are so impressed with the way in which many of our families have adjusted and embraced online classes!
During this closure, 45% of our students have continued with online learning! We have even had requests to continue online classes, after we reopen. We think that is a great idea, in some cases, and are working with our teaching artists to determine how/when this could be a good fit, particularly for make up classes! Nothing substitutes the one on one, in person class, but online classes have proven to have advantages, as well. We will work with our teaching artists to determine the best and most effective means for incorporating a level of online classes here at NMS.
Timeline:
For the safety of the whole community, this timeline is subject to change, based on the trends and information regarding the spread ad containment of COVID-19 and recommendations of the County, Department of Health and City of Los Angeles.
- Beginning June 1, staff will return to NMS in a limited capacity. During this time, we will be reviewing the room set-up in the school, cleaning and reorganizing the house to ensure that our common spaces are safe, secure and stocked with necessary tools and procedures. We will be reviewing the student schedule, and determining what changes may need to be made. We are hoping these will be minimal, and all changes will be made in conversation with the families and teaching artists.
- Beginning June 15th, teaching artists may return to the school to organize and prepare for the return of students. This will not conflict with online classes that are currently in progress.
- Beginning July 6th, we are hopeful this will be the week where we can have a "soft open" for make up lessons and necessary parent meetings.
- Beginning July 13th, we are hopeful that we can begin to resume classes at the school. This, again, will be dependent on a number of factors including: Recommendations from the City, County and Dept. of Health, establishment of safety and sanitary procedures throughout the school, evidence of safety and limited spread throughout the city, as restrictions are released.
- August 4-8th Scholarship and Ensemble Auditions. NMS will be closed for scholarship and ensemble auditions. If you are a current scholarship student, you do not need to audition again. Your scholarship has been moved forward into the next scholarship session.
As the city looks toward reopening, so do we! We look forward to our house, once again, filled with music and learning. We will make sure to reopen in a safe, secure and supportive way.

Becas:
· Si recibió una beca en febrero,
no necesitará
volver a audicionar.
