NMSHSA Monthly Newsletter - Issue 36 - 2022
National Migrant & Seasonal Head Start Association (NMSHSA)

NMSHSA Public Policy Forum
Monday, June 13, 2022

Registration Cost: $ 369 (for all members and parents)
The Public Policy Forum (PPF) is our annual event to inform and educate our Migrant & Seasonal Head Start members on the latest policy issues impacting our community and to inspire them to make their voices heard. We truly believe our best advocates are our MSHS parents, staff, and directors. The PPF invites them to the nation’s capital where they will learn from policy experts in a range of issues, including early childhood education policy, budgetary policy, farmworker advocacy, and K-12 and higher education policy. With this basis of knowledge, our MSHS members will be ready to make their voices heard and advocate on behalf of the MSHS communities across the country in the (virtual) halls of Congress.

Hill Visit Prep

For members that cannot attend in-person but would still like to advocate in MSHS Advocacy Month in our virtual Hill Meetings, we are offering a one-day Hill Visit Prep on Thursday, June 16. This will include sessions on advocacy, how to tell your story, and understanding NMSHSA’s FY23 Ask.
We will give members the necessary information and tools to be the best advocates in our MSHS Advocacy Month. Materials will be provided virtually.

Hill Visit Prep will be available virtually for those that register for the full PPF. Those that cannot attend in-person in Washington, DC will be charged a discounted price of $199 for Hill Visit Prep. We request you register for either the PPF or the Hill Visit Prep to attend MSHS Advocacy Month.

Empowering Families for Children’s Vision

Join us for the third webinar in our series on the Vision Health of Children with Special Needs to learn how parents can advocate for their children’s vision health. In this webinar, a parent of a child with special learning needs and a vision disorder will share her story. Participants will learn how to identify and best use the variety of community, medical, and school resources to enhance the vision health of children with special needs. Participants will also learn how eye care providers work with parents to make an early diagnosis of vision problems and to help ensure the best possible vision outcomes. Parents/guardians and professionals are invited to this webinar, which will address children ages 3 through 8 years.

SNAP Eligibility for Head Start Services

The interpretation of “public assistance” in Sec. 645 of the Head Start Act now includes receipt of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.

This policy change allows Head Start programs to reach families better and coordinate benefit programs so that families eligible for multiple programs can more easily participate in services for which they qualify.
