Hello Members,

April is an important awareness month with Safe Digging, Distracted Driving and Work Zone Safety Week. Below, I have shared some valuable information on these topics and links to more information so that you can observe this month's awareness campaigns with your peers and workforce. Also, the SafetyDude LLC newsletter has a lot of good information too.

Our March meeting was well attended and Carla Sonntag, NMBC, presented some very good information about the recent session. I hope to see you at our next meeting in April.

Links for our safety award and the scholarships are also below.

High Wind and Fugitive Dust Reminder

(2nd posting for emphasis through Spring)

We are in New Mexico's "windy season," and excessive particulate pollution caused by blowing dust is a health hazard. Excessive dust can also limit roadway visibility and impact neighboring properties.

Contractors:

  • All fugitive dust permit holders, as well as all businesses with surface disturbance activities, are responsible for dust control throughout the week (INCLUDING WEEKENDS).
  • Reasonably available control measures and mitigative measures shall be taken to ensure that sites are left in stable condition at close of each business day and going into the weekend.
  • Mitigative measures include: complete watering; additional fabric fence installation; application of dust suppressants.
  • Failure to contain / minimize fugitive dust via reasonably available control measures may result in enforcement action and penalties.

Area contractors and businesses must comply with Albuquerque-Bernalillo County's fugitive dust regulation. For assistance, please email aqd@cabq.gov, call Tony Romero at 228-6989.

Safety Focus -

April is Safe Digging Month

Call Before You Dig -- At Home & Work

Because it's the time of year when temperatures increase in many parts of the country and spring digging projects begin, April is an important time to remember how important it is to contact 811 at least a few days before putting a shovel in the ground.

To join us this NSDM in reminding your neighbors and others to have buried utilities marked before digging.

Know what's below, 811 before you dig!

Distracted Driving Work Zone Safety

Awareness Month Awareness Week

Distracted driving has become a deadly epidemic on our roads. Cell phone use — specifically, texting, talking, and social media use — has become the most common distraction. Other risky actions include adjusting the radio or GPS, applying makeup, eating and drinking. By driving distracted, you’re robbing yourself of seconds that you may need to avoid a close call or deadly crash.

National Work Zone Awareness Week (NWZAW) is an annual spring campaign held at the start of construction season to encourage safe driving through highway work zones. The key message is for drivers to use extra caution in work zones. NWZAW is April 15-19, hosted by the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT). Learn all about the 2024 theme and poster, find the schedule of events, access event and promo guides, and more.
