November 2023

From the Executive Director's Desk

Hello Members,

OK, it's November and the holidays are closing in fast! I'm sure that we'll be having some cooler weather soon, but for now, the sunshine and warmth have been wonderful. Thanks to everyone that came to the End of Year Social on November 3rd to help celebrate NMUCA's year. There's a link below in the newsletter if you would like to check out the pictures from the evening.

I hope that you had the opportunity this year to participate in our events and/or meetings. The NMUCA Board will be conducting a strategic planning session and would like your input for 2024. Suggestions should be sent to Jane via email (below), or you can call at (505) 362 8950. We already have some ideas for next year to make your membership experience worth your time and investment.

We have two new members this month - Crane Service Inc. and Kelly Cable. We welcome you to our Association and are looking forward to getting to know you and your company in the upcoming months.

I hope to see you soon. Stay safe!

If you haven’t updated your employment policies at least five times in the past 12 months, it is probably out of date. With 2024 around the corner, it’s time to review and update your employee handbook, if you haven’t already done so, to ensure it is legally compliant and reflects the latest developments affecting HR and employment.

Several significant legal changes have happened in recent years, especially on the state and local levels, that have or will have a substantial impact on workplace policies. An updated handbook is critical for communicating workplace policies on employee conduct and performance. It can also serve as evidence and may minimize employer liability in case of a lawsuit. We will look at common mistakes made in policy manuals, new and essential policies your manual should include, and NOT include, policy changes for 2023-24, preparing multi-state policy manuals, and proper language to use to keep you out of trouble. This practical webinar will also discuss best practices for writing policies, procedures, and supporting documentation to help you develop logical and easy-to-understand documents. We will also explore tips for writing proper policies and traps to be avoided in your policy manuals and for assuring that organization-wide policies and practices are uniformly enforced.

Carbon Monoxide Safety Talk

Carbon monoxide (CO) poses a serious threat to individuals both at home and on the job. According to the CDC, each year, more than 400 Americans die from unintentional CO poisoning not linked to fires, more than 20,000 people visit the emergency room, and more than 4,000 people are hospitalized. CO poisoning is the leading cause of poisoning deaths in the US. Carbon monoxide is an invisible, odorless, colorless gas created when fuels (such as gasoline, wood, coal, natural gas, propane, oil, and methane) burn incompletely.

Symptoms of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

  • Weakness
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Shortness of breath
  • Confusion
  • Blurred vision
  • Loss of consciousness

If you or people around you are experiencing these symptoms, it is important to get them and yourself out of the area. Being exposed to CO for an extended amount of time can cause irreversible brain damage and eventually death.

General Safety Tips

  • Never burn charcoal indoors
  • Never leave your car running in a garage or any poorly ventilated area
  • Never heat your house with your stove- this can lead to a buildup of CO in your house
  • Never use a generator inside your house.

Illness Prevention

Avoid the situations mentioned above. Have gas-burning appliances and heaters regularly inspected by a professional to ensure there are no issues with using them in the home. Install carbon monoxide alarms on each floor of a building or home. Test the alarms at least once a month and replace them according to the manufacturer’s guidelines. People who are asleep or intoxicated are very susceptible to CO poisoning, and alarms are the only chance to alert them to danger before it is too late.

Discussion point:

-Has anyone experienced a problem with a carbon monoxide leak?
