2025 NNA Annual Community Meeting Website Now Live and Registration Open

The NNA Community Office is excited to announce that the 2025 NNA Annual Community Meeting website is live and registration is now open! This meeting will be fully in-person on March 23, 2025, held in conjunction with Arctic Science Summit Week in Boulder, Colorado. The website contains information on the agenda at-a-glance, meeting venue, and travel logistics to Boulder.

2024 Arctic Report Card

The Arctic continues to warm at a faster rate than the global average. The 2024 Arctic Report Card highlights record-breaking and near-record-breaking observations that demonstrate dramatic change, including Arctic tundra transformation from carbon sink to carbon source, declines of previously large inland caribou herds, and increasing winter precipitation. Observations also reveal regional differences that make local and regional experiences of environmental change highly variable for people, plants and animals. Adaptation is increasingly necessary and Indigenous Knowledge and community-led research programs are essential to understand and respond to rapid Arctic changes.

ELOKA Releases New Report on Data Management for Indigenous Guardian Programs

The Exchange for Local Observations and Knowledge in the Arctic (ELOKA) recently released a new report on data management for the Indigenous Guardian programs. These programs within Canada support Indigenous environmental stewardship and land management through a network of over 85 First Nations, Inuit, and Métis-led programs across the country. Indigenous Guardian programs and funded harvesting programs directly support Indigenous self-determination and food sovereignty. While each program has unique objectives, the overarching goal is to support Indigenous environmental stewardship and land management. The Indigenous Guardians Data Roundtable was held January 30 and 31, 2024 in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. During this meeting, program leads discussed data they collect during harvesting and land stewardship programs, use of these data, and needs and priorities relating to data management, including how data management and data sharing can help sustain Guardian programs. This report summarizes and shares the main points from this meeting.

Reminder: Call for Community Outreach Fair Flash Talks

Do you want an opportunity to connect your NNA project to Arctic community members and decision-makers across Alaska? The NNA-CO is hosting a session of NNA flash talks in the upcoming Arctic Outreach Fair that will take place as part of the Alaska Forum of the Environment (AFE) on February 6, 2025. AFE gathers environmental professionals from government agencies, non-profit organizations, businesses, community leaders, and Alaska youth to discuss the latest projects, processes, and issues that affect the environment in Alaska.

If you are interested in participating, please fill out the form below. If accepted, we will ask you to prepare a 3-minute flash talk about your project’s relevance to Arctic communities and what outreach opportunities you have to offer attendees.. The session will be a hybrid event, with both in-person and online audience members. Your flash talk may be in-person, online, or pre-recorded (presenters receive a complimentary day pass for the conference). We will hold a practice flash talk session prior to the event.

Apply here for one of our 10 spots in the Arctic Outreach Fair by January 10, 2025 at 11:59pm AK. Any questions? Email sjclement@alaska.edu.

Upcoming NNA-CO Learn & Connect Series Event

The NNA-CO Learn & Connect Series (formerly Broader Impacts Network) is designed to bring NNA projects that work across the Arctic together to learn from and connect to each other, as well as increase the capacity for culturally appropriate education and outreach.

Inclusive Mentoring

January 23, 2025  |  11am-12pm AKT / 1-2pm MT / 3-4pm ET

Research has shown that students with mentoring relationships are happier, successful, and more likely to stay in their chosen career. In this workshop, Dr. Anne Gold (NNA-CO; University of Colorado Boulder) will talk about how to build a more inclusive research environment and provide you with the tools you need to foster meaningful mentoring relationships and build your own support networks. Registration is required, so follow this link to register.
