Call for Self-nominations: NNA-CO Advisory Board

The NNA Community Office (NNA-CO) invites self-nominations to serve on the NNA-CO Advisory Board. After three years (2021-2024) of implementing two separate advisory boards–a Research Advisory Board and an Indigenous Advisory Board, this next iteration of the NNA-CO’s advisory structure will be a single, diverse board of advisors. We are looking to fill the board with a combination of NNA PIs and Co-PIs, Indigenous community members/scholars/organizational and Tribal representatives, early career researchers (<8 years since terminal degree), and non-NNA Arctic experts. Open the self-nomination form below to learn more and/or nominate yourself. We would also greatly appreciate it if you would share this opportunity with those in your network who might be a good fit for this role.

Self-nomination form

Nominations are invited through Friday, August 9, 2024 at 11:59pm MT. If you have questions about this form or the NNA-CO Advisory Board, please contact the NNA-CO at contact@nna-co.org

Call for Contributions: Nuna Zine

The next issue of the NNA-CO's Nuna Zine is featuring all things land. Do you have a story about land or subsistence you would like to share? Does your research involve the land, permafrost, erosion, or wildlife/land mammals? We are accepting contributions such as personal essays, poetry, resource and research project overviews, as well as narratives that feature cultural influence and impact. Research assistants, graduate students, and community partners are encouraged to contribute.

The deadline to submit is August 15, 2024. Please contact Jessica Lewis-Nicori at jlewisnicori@alaskapacific.edu for story/article guidelines.

NNA Photo Contest

The NNA-CO is hosting a photo contest to showcase the beauty of the Arctic and its peoples, along with all the remarkable work that goes into NNA research.

We invite your photos of fieldwork, research stations and sites, communities and life in the Arctic (with permissions), wildlife, natural landscapes, and cultural landscapes. Though, all ideas are welcome! There will be prizes for the top three photo submissions, as well as for seven honorable mentions. The NNA-CO plans to use the submitted photos for outreach, engagement, and communications about NNA.

Deadline to submit your photos is September 30, 2024. Read the contest rules and submit your photos here.

AGU24 Abstracts Due July 31

The American Geophysical Union (AGU) is committed to the AGU24 theme of What’s Next for Science, specifically:

  • Making Earth and space data and scientific advancement more accessible, interoperable, and impactful.
  • Expanding scientific collaborations across disciplines and geographic barriers in the Earth and space sciences and beyond.
  • How Earth and space scientists can be leaders in the preservation, sharing, and attribution of datasets and software ensuring proper credit and driving innovation.

Be part of leading the future! Submit an abstract to AGU24. Abstracts should focus on scientific results, enabling Earth and space science or its application, and/or the contribution of Earth and space science to society.

There are many sessions that could be of interest to the NNA community, so please consider submitting an abstract by 11:59pm US EDT on July 31.

Workshop Opportunities

Arctic Data Center’s 2025 Data Science Training Workshops

Each year, the Arctic Data Center offers hands-on workshops both in Santa Barbara, CA, and virtually. Their team is pleased to announce the dates for their 2025 data science training workshops and invite applicants for the first in-person course, "Fundamentals of Qualitative and Quantitative Data Management for Arctic Research." This course will be held at the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS) in Santa Barbara, CA, from January 27-31, 2025.

This workshop provides an introduction to programming in R, an overview of reproducible and ethical research practices, qualitative data management, and more. Limited travel support is available for in-person participants.

Deadline to apply to the first course is August 16, 2024. Learn more here

Cyber2A Workshop

NNA-CO Convergence Working Group Highlights

At the 2024 NNA Annual Community Meeting, the Infrastructure Futures Convergence Working Group (CWG) organized a panel on “Envisioning the Future of Arctic Infrastructure Research”, held a lunch discussion in collaboration with the RATIC 2023 Permafrost & Infrastructure Symposium organizers, and conducted outreach about the NNA-CO’s “Connecting Arctic Priorities” (CAP) Portal online database of Indigenous-authored documents and policies. The panel presented progress and good practices for studying Arctic infrastructures, transformations of infrastructure due to climate and social change, the impact of infrastructure on local communities as well as Indigenous Peoples, and opportunities for planning just and equitable infrastructure futures. Lunch included ideas on working together with Kawerak in studies of infrastructure. Check out the summary report

Get involved! If you have ideas or comments about the CAP Portal, the Infrastructure Futures CWG is collecting input here. Take a look at the CAP Flyer and CAP Portal Poster for more information.

Arctic Observing Systems & Technology (AOST) Working Group

  • The AOST CWG is looking at sustained community-based observations in the Arctic, with recent discussions included in this ASSW 2024 session report.
  • AOST CWG members also co-hosted a summer camp on community-based environmental sensing for Alaska high-school students at Ilisagvik College in Utqiagvik, Alaska.

Fostering Indigenous-Led Research (FILR) Working Group
