NNA Sessions at Arctic Science Summit Week (ASSW)

The NNA Community Office has put together a list of ASSW and ICARP IV sessions that may be of particular interest to the NNA community. We hope it is of use as you put together your ASSW/ICARP schedule.

ASSW Indigenous Pavilion Schedule Now Online

The schedule for the ASSW Indigenous Pavilion is now online. If you’re attending ASSW or the ICARP IV Summit, we invite you to visit the Indigenous Pavilion and take part in one of the many offerings there that will take place from March 24-28. These offerings include film screenings, conference sessions, games, artist showcases, and more, so take a look at the program as you plan your ASSW schedule.

NNA Student Research Presentations at ASSW

March 28, 2025 | 2:00-3:00pm MT

On Friday, March 28, students participating in the NNA undergraduate research program will be presenting the preliminary results of their research at the end of the ICARP IV Summit. These students are working with the Arctic Observatory and Knowledge Hub (AAOKH) and Arctic Rain on Snow (AROSS) projects to use local observations, local knowledge, and traditional knowledge to answer questions about a changing Arctic. If you are attending the ICARP Summit, please join us to hear more from the students about their work. You can read more about the students and their research here.

Join the Arctic Data Center at ASSW to learn more about creating a project data portal

The Arctic Data Center (ADC) team invites the Navigating the New Arctic (NNA) community to join them during ASSW on Wednesday, March 26 from 1:30-3:30pm MT to learn more about creating data portals to help share and organize data from your NNA project. This event will take place in the CASE building in Room E351.

The NNA community has already contributed over 170 datasets to the ADC and continues to expand. Despite this large amount of data, NNA project data can be hard to find as it is interleaved with thousands of other datasets at the ADC. To address this issue, the ADC will hold office hours during ASSW that will focus on supporting NNA projects interested in creating project data portals to highlight their results via geospatial data visualizations like interactive maps and 3D point clouds. ADC data portals allow researchers to create a coherent presentation of data, results, and findings in one centralized place, where additional information and project context can be provided to serve various audiences. This session will allow researchers to connect directly with the ADC team to work through the creation and navigation of our data portals and help us survey the diverse needs of the NNA community.

Feel free to reach out with questions ahead of time or just drop in during the session to learn more; there is no need to schedule an appointment ahead of time. Contact: Nicole Greco greco@nceas.ucsb.edu

CryoCommunity's Gear Sharing Resource

If you are US-based and attending a summer school or conducting field work in the coming months (either in or outside of the US) that requires gear you don’t have, please consider using the CryoCommunity gear-sharing webpage. Funding is available and ready to support shipping of gear and gear cleaning materials. For priority consideration for financial support, please contact Marion McKenzie at marion.mckenzie@mines.edu by April 11, 2025 for information about application materials. We are excited to connect people willing to share gear to those in need of gear and look forward to financially supporting community members in acquiring gear — let us spend this money on you!

NNA-CO Convergence Working Group (CWG) Highlights

Fostering Indigenous-led Research (FILR) Convergence Working Group

The FILR CWG early career co-leads were interviewed for the Arctic Together podcast last month; stay tuned for the episode release! The FILR CWG is also recording a new podcast mini-series exploring various aspects of fostering Indigenous-led research, which will be released through the Arctic Together podcast. Additionally, they are hosting a day-long hybrid workshop at the Arctic Science Summit Week (ASSW), titled Strategies Toward Indigenous-Led Research: Be a Changemaker in Arctic Research at Every Stage of Your Career. This workshop will feature four interactive sessions addressing challenges at different career levels and will take place on March 21 from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm.

Arctic Observing Systems & Technology (AOST) Convergence Working Group

  • The AOST CWG awarded two travel stipends to early career researchers to attend ASSW 2025. They also awarded one stipend and three research awards to support early career and Indigenous researchers in the fields of observation technology and knowledge sharing.
  • The AOST CWG team will present findings from two previous workshops at ASSW 2025, which will lead to the development of a white paper. AOST co-chairs will also support a training session for early career researchers in support of the FILR CWG.

Infrastructure Futures (IF) Convergence Working Group

  • The IF CWG hosted a CRAFT webinar in February on Biophysical Research and Arctic Infrastructure, the recording of which is now available on YouTube. The next CRAFT webinar will be April 7 at 9am AKT on “Arctic Infrastructure Mapping with AI” co-hosted with the Permafrost Discovery Gateway. Find the link at the CRAFT Research Network Facebook page
  • The IF CWG team will co-host a CRAFT community meeting on March 20 at ASSW 2025.
