Call for Mentors: NNA Research Experience for Undergraduate Students

The Navigating the New Arctic (NNA) Research Experience for Undergraduate Students (REU) is a paid research program designed to provide Alaska community college and university undergraduate students with an authentic research experience with Arctic community priorities at the center. The NNA-CO is currently seeking mentors to guide 2-3 NNA REU students as they engage in hands-on, community-connected Arctic research in January and February of 2026. The January portion will be virtual, and in February mentors will attend the Alaska Forum in Anchorage, AK with the students. Mentors will receive a $500 stipend and conference registration (travel costs not included). If interested, please reach out to alicia.christensen@colorado.edu by December 4, 2025.

Reminder: Save the Dates for the 2026 NNA Annual Community Meeting

Don’t forget to save the dates for the 2026 NNA Annual Community Meeting, which will be held in Fairbanks, Alaska during September 15–17, 2026. While we have hosted our meetings in spring for the past two years, we decided to shift to a different timing next year. In addition to this NNA community gathering, we will also be offering a range of both virtual and smaller in-person gatherings during the months ahead. Our list of upcoming events can be found here, where even more events will be added and announced in the coming weeks.

Arctic Frontiers 2026: Turn of the Tide

February 2-5, 2026 | Tromsø, Norway and virtual

In the Arctic, as across the globe, tides are shifting. Geopolitical landscapes are evolving, climate systems are accelerating, and economic structures are being reshaped. From rising temperatures and economic recalibration to cultural resurgence, the Arctic is both a witness to and a driver of transformation. The 2026 theme underscores the ebb and flow of the world, and the time for change. In this moment of opportunity, conference organizers invite participants to reflect on the rhythms of global change and their implications for the pan-Arctic region. The conference will bring together leading voices to examine the state of Arctic collaboration, economic transitions, infrastructure needs, technological frontiers, and the health of the ocean that unites the region. And as the world’s tide turns, attendees will explore how the Arctic can influence, adapt to, and help shape the global future.

NNA Project Highlight

AccelNet: Accelerating Discoveries at Greenlands Marine Margins Through International Collaboration

The GRISONET AccelNet project (GRISO) advances research on key questions about Greenland’s coastal margins, including how ocean variability affects the ice sheet and how ice-sheet change influences regional and global oceans and marine ecosystems. GRISO activities included four international working groups on Ice Sheet Forcing Ocean, Ocean Forcing Ice Sheet, Data, and Paleoclimate. These groups engaged through workshops, meeting sessions, GRISO-wide collaboration training, and are concluding their work through upcoming publications. To highlight research at Greenland’s margins and showcase questions, methods, and collaborations involving scientists in Greenland and local communities, GRISO funded the Greenland’s Living Fjords’ Storymap, launched in November 2025 at Greenland Science Week in Nuuk. Several Greenland teacher groups are interested in using it as an educational tool, and a Greenlandic translation is in progress.

GRISO has also run an annual summer school since 2022 for advanced PhD students and Postdocs studying Greenland’s margins. The school covers science and culture around Greenland, its fjords and ice sheet, and their broader climate connections. Core elements include discussions on Greenland’s Research Strategy, meetings with Greenland organizations and researchers, training in creative problem solving and collaboration, and building a strong research network across career stages. The 4th summer school, held in Nuuk in September 2025, received very positive student reviews! The 5th (and final) summer school is planned for May 2026, with the application announcement coming soon.
