Call for Posters: Virtual NNA Student Research Showcase

The NNA-CO invites all undergraduate and graduate students associated with an NNA project to share their research at our Virtual NNA Student Research Showcase! This virtual poster session will be hosted by the NNA-CO Education & Outreach team on November 6, 2023 from 2-3pm AKT / 4-5pm MT / 6-7pm ET (tentative). Students will have the chance to present their posters or 1-2 slides about their research in 3-minute presentations, followed by questions from the audience. This is a great opportunity for students to present and receive valuable feedback from the NNA community prior to AGU and the 2024 NNA Annual Community Meeting.

Please use the form below to register a student presentation by October 30 at 11:59pm MT.

Opportunities for Early Career Researchers

PSECCO BAJEDI Workshop for Polar Early Career Scientists

The Polar Science Early Career Community Office (PSECCO) is excited to announce its second belonging, accessibility, justice, equity, diversity and inclusion (BAJEDI) workshop specifically designed for polar early career scientists. This workshop will be run by the excellent folks with THRIVE Lifeline (https://thrivelifeline.org) in conjunction with PSECCO. This free online virtual workshop will be run via Zoom, taking place on Tuesday, October 3rd, 2023, between 10am and 1pm MT.

PSECCO 2023 BAJEDI Micro-grant Solicitation

PSECCO is committed to enhancing diversity and inclusion, and working towards building a just and equitable environment in the polar sciences. To support this mission, PSECCO is excited to announce the 2023 cycle of PSECCO BAJEDI Microgrants. Awards should support the work of historically excluded scholars in the polar sciences, bring polar education to communities historically excluded from the polar sciences or it should advance the work of a person, program or group that is already doing that work.

IASC Fellowship Program 2024

The International Arctic Science Committee (IASC), in cooperation with the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS), is launching its IASC Fellowships Program 2024. The program will engage early career researchers in the work of the IASC Working Groups, the 4th International Conference on Arctic Research Planning Process (ICARP IV), and key IASC partners, including the Sustaining Arctic Observing Network (SAON).

The deadline for applications for all fellowships is October 18, 2023 at 7:00am MT.

Call for Abstracts: Alaska Marine Science Symposium

The Alaska Marine Science Symposium (AMSS) has been bringing together scientists, educators, resource managers, students, and interested public for over thirty years to discuss the latest marine research being conducted in Alaskan waters. In the past, the Symposium has included papers on the human dimensions of marine science. This year, organizers would like to bring back that tradition by encouraging presentations on the human dimensions of marine science and research that include collaborations with local place-based researchers.

Submission deadline: October 6, 2023 at 11:59pm AKT

NNA Project Highlight

Greenland Hazards Project

The goal of the Greenland Hazards Project is to investigate changing hazards due to climate change, including cascading hazards such as the increased occurrence of large landslides and the resulting tsunami potential, through a combination of remote sensing analysis and field research. The objectives of the 2023 field season were: 1) to install GNSS stations that would serve as tide gauges and build a data network designed to test the ability of these stations to accurately identify large waves, and 2) to foster and develop relationships with both research colleagues and the local communities that would be affected by the potential hazards. The team started the season in Nuuk, Greenland, where they successfully connected a GNSS station/tide gauge and strengthened partnerships with Asiaq Greenland Survey and the Greenland National Museum. These interactions and the time spent in Nuuk better prepared the group for their visit to Uummannaq, Greenland, where they spent the bulk of their time.

In Uummannaq, the team successfully installed a bedrock GNSS station/tide gauge close to the main harbor and that station is transmitting complete, usable data. The group also scouted for potential locations for a remote GNSS station(s) in a nearby fjord so that they can be deployed safely and effectively next field season. While the team conducted their research, they also spent time and effort establishing a positive reciprocal relationship with the Uummannaq community at large. It remains a goal of the project to continue developing this relationship in the years to come.
