The rhetoric and practice around "funding what works"-scaling the impact of programs that have proven success rates-runs the risk of perpetuating a nagging problem for the nonprofit sector: excellent programs cannot exist without healthy organizations. The fact is that nonprofits are enterprises. Many funding and management practices-some of which aim to be best practices-do not embrace this and the nonprofit sector struggles because of it. Yet many grantmakers are not trained to assess enterprise health.

Lauren Katzowitz Shenfield has prepared a feature for the on-line magazine of Grantmakers in the Arts.  The article is a celebration of the Anonymous Was A Woman grant program for women artists over 40, featuring the just announced 2014 winners and looking forward to the program's 20th Anniversary in 2015. Anonymous Was A Woman was created and is administered by Philanthropy Advisors, LLC for a private donor.


At the forthcoming Communications Network conference, Thaler Pekar, CEO of  Thaler Pekar & Partners, will be joining David Isay of StoryCorps to talk about their oral history projects for The Atlantic Philanthropies. The breakout session is entitled, Who Cares About Your Foundation's History?
 

Brian Sooy, president of Aespire (Elyria, OH) is co-presenting with Bob Cahen, Executive Director of The Lakeland Foundation, at the CASE Conference for Community College Advancement.

The topic of their session is Catalyst Committees: Engaging Donors and Getting Things Done.   Brian has also published a new slidecast based on the seminar titled "12 Resolutions for Better Communications" for mission-driven organizations. Learn the principles that help organizations communicate their purpose, character, and culture; gain an understanding of how mission driven design can positively impact communications and relationships.      

 

Kris Putnam-Walklerly, President of Putnam Consulting Group (Cleveland, OH) will be presenting Community of Practice, Philanthropy 2.0 on October 3, 2014 at Philanthropy Ohio.  At this session, Kris will help grantmakers explore the talent and leadership development pipeline and its specific relationship to the nonprofit sectorComplete details can be found here
