LSU has deployed a new IBM supercomputer called Delta to advance big data research in the state. The computer is housed at LSU's campus in Baton Rouge and initially will be utilized to expand biomedical research capabilities in the life sciences, including the areas of bioinformatics and computational biology.

Regenerative Medicine Startup BioAesthetics Wins BioChallenge
Startup BioAesthetics has won $25,000 in the 2015 BioChallenge pitch competition. The company is developing a regenerative graft that offers an improved reconstruction option for breast cancer patients who have undergone a mastectomy. The other three finalists were Zenopharm, InnoGenomics, and Flux Diagnostics. The judges who selected the overall winner were industry experts and investors from Johnson & Johnson Innovation, Becton Dickinson, and more. InnoGenomics was awarded the $2,500 Audience Favorite award, based on the winner of text votes by event attendees.

D&P Bioinnovations Named a Finalist in Global Startup Open
The annual Startup Open is a competition for new startups that honors the GEW 50 -- 50 of the most promising ventures from around the world selected based on their growth potential, creativity, level of development, and pitching skills. Founded by Tulane PhD candidate Derek Dashti, D&P Bioinnovations has been named to the GEW 50 out of more than 800 global applicants. D&P is developing an implantable medical device to regenerate a damaged esophagus. These startups now compete for a grand prize trip to the 2016 Global Entrepreneurship Congress.

Free Local Screening Opportunity for Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms
Based at the Center, AAAneurysm Outreach is a non-profit dedicated to raising awareness of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) and encouraging at-risk individuals to get screened. The condition often goes undiagnosed, despite being treatable, and AAA is the third leading cause of sudden death in men over 60. LSU Health New Orleans Honors Faculty Researchers
At its inaugural Celebration of Innovation, LSU Health New Orleans celebrated 20 patents, competitively awarded grants to research solutions for devastating diseases, and commercialization agreements for everything from a new therapeutic method for treating cancer to new analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and therapeutic compounds to treat neuro-degenerative diseases developed by faculty innovators. The November 11 event, with the overall goal of driving both academic innovation and technology transfer, recognized a total of 29 faculty researchers for their accomplishments.

Global Entrepreneurship Week Events Highlight Bio in Louisiana
The Center hosted multiple events during Global Entrepreneurship Week for more than 450 people to educate innovators and highlight pioneering research being undertaken across Louisiana. Attendees from 11 states learned about life sciences entrepreneurship at the Innovation Louisiana 2015 conference, and nine statewide research institutions showcased license-ready technologies in numerous industries before the BioChallenge competition. The BioFund Golf Scramble closed out the week with more than 50 professionals networking and supporting our region's growing innovation community.
