Teen Enjoys Bicycle Awarded through Olam’s Piggybank Grant Program
Abby Owens is one of the latest grant recipients from Olam’s Piggybank Grant Program. Abby received a 3-wheel adult bicycle through the program last fall. Abby’s mom, Jessica Owens, said they hoped the bike would help them find a way for Abby to get more exercise and be a fun activity for the family. “Abby is pretty sedentary, and her feet and legs hurt when she walks long distances,” said Jessica. “She has been doing horseback riding therapy once a week and it’s helping with core strength, but we wanted her to strengthen her legs more too.”

As a toddler and young girl, Abby had a children’s tricycle and could also ride small bikes with training wheels. But as she got older, she was unable to fit on a children’s bike or ride a bicycle on two wheels. Now 17 years old, Abby’s new bike is perfect for a teenager. “Abby was so excited and immediately hopped on it with no trouble, added Jessica. “The first couple of times she rode the bike, she rode it so much she was physically exhausted! We have seen the bike help improve her mood and confidence, and she’s definitely getting more exercise.”

Grant submissions through Olam’s Piggybank are open through the end of May and again during the month of October. The application is online and only takes a few minutes to complete. Grant criteria, eligible and non-eligible items, and the application form are available at https://nodcc.org/resources/grants/ .
Family Highlight: Meet the Collins Family

Meet the Collins family. Gina, Robbie, and 4-year-old Micah live in Southern California. Gina believes that having an early diagnosis has helped them tremendously.

How and when did you receive the diagnosis?
We found out during my 2nd trimester. Routine ultrasound. We got referred to a Specialist and
with an MRI they confirmed the findings. He has isolated complete ACC.

What are some challenges you are currently experiencing?
Finding suitable therapy for his needs. Finding more medical research or information on what to expect for his future. Meeting other families that can understand the true struggles of caring and loving someone that requires lots of attention and medical care.

What are some of Micah’s recent successes and celebrations?
Micah is becoming better at communicating. He is nonverbal but very expressive with facial expressions and various body movements. He is utilizing his signs a little more to the best of his abilities. Having this type of communication has limited the meltdowns and frustration. It's a small improvement but it has a big impact.

The Collins family has not attended an NODCC conference in the past but hopes to attend one in the future. Please help welcome them to our wonderful NODCC family!

We celebrate our moms this month and thank them for all they do!

Her love is like
an island in life's ocean,
vast and wide
A peaceful, quiet shelter
From the wind, the rain, the tide.

Tis bound on the north by Hope,
By Patience on the West,
By tender Counsel on the South
And on the East by Rest.

Above it like a beacon light
Shine Faith, and Truth, and Prayer;
And thro' the changing scenes of life
I find a haven there.

RESEARCH STUDY:

-Facebook Post Shared by Jasmin Turner

The California Institute of Technology and University of Minnesota are examining behavioral development in infants (6 to 36 months) with Agenesis or Dysgenesis of the Corpus Callosum (ACC). Ultimately, this understanding can be used to create more effective intervention techniques and supports for individuals with ACC. This is the first study examining behavioral development in infants with Agenesis / Dysgenesis of the Corpus Callosum (ACC) from birth into early childhood. We cannot begin to truly appreciate the potential for early intervention in ACC until we understand how these diagnoses are influencing behavior and neurological development during this critical period of time.
