Can you believe that 2023 is almost in the books? This time of the year we tend to look back to see what we have achieved so far, and forward with our heart and mind full of New Year's resolutions. What are yours? Ours is to keep furthering our mission of creating a thriving community that embraces our Italian culture, and empowering women of Italian descent.
NOIAW is approaching 2024 with two new members elected to the National Board, Cristina Carabetta and Rossella Rago. Read below about them and find out how amazing they are! Speaking of NOIAW Board members: did you know that Adriana Trigiani was honored "Cavaliere dell'Ordine della Stella d'Italia" by the Italian President Sergio Mattarella? And that NOIAW Founder & Chair Emerita, Aileen Riotto Sirey, was bestowed with a Lifetime Achievement Award by Italian Charities of America?

Cristina Carabetta, Esq. is the Founder and Principal Attorney at The Legal Consult Group, owner of the luxury brand Betta Bag, and Chairperson of the National Italian American Bar Association.
Cristina founded The Legal Consult Group to assist startups and small businesses navigate the business and legal arena. While practicing in the corporate world, Cristina saw the daily inequalities women face. Keep reading about Cristina here

Rossella Rago is an Italian American cookbook author, host and entrepreneur. She was born and raised in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, to parents who emigrated from Mola di Bari, a small fishing village in Puglia, and grew up deeply rooted in her Italian and American heritage. Rossella has authored 3 cookbooks.

Hail to Cavaliere Adriana! | |

Adriana Trigiani, award-winning author, filmmaker and National Board member, was appointed "Cavaliere dell'Ordine della Stella d'Italia" (the Order of the Star of Italy) by President Sergio Mattarella. She formally received the honor on May 17th, 2023 but the knighting ceremony was held on November 30th, 2023 at the Italian Consulate in New York.

Italian Women Scientists Go Places
There are four Italians among the world's best women scientists according to the latest annual ranking by research.com, which each year lists the world's excellence chart based on the number of publications and citations.
Oncological epidemiology expert Silvia Franceschi ranked as 20th; national nuclear physics institute research chief Speranza Falciano is 62nd; epidemiologist and Bologna University lecturer Eva Negri 70th; and Pavia University cardiology lecturer Silvia Priori 85th.
Resarch.com's table of the top 1,000 female scientists included another 22 Italians in fields ranging from medicine to astrophysics.

The Long Island Network Celebrated the Holidays
The NOIAW Greater New York - Long Island Network celebrated the Holidays with a sumptuous luncheon at the Strathmore Vanderbilt Country Club. The event, as usual, was a great success. Anne D’Innocenzio is a national business writer for The Associated Press and is based in Manhattan. Her focus is the retail industry. When not reporting, Anne enjoys playing piano and going to museums and theaters in Manhattan. She has also performed on and off at the New Talent Show at Carolines on Broadway before the pandemic, riffing about her overprotective Italian Catholic mother and her family. Her standup comedy morphed into her one hour solo show called “The Red Light Zones,” which she performed in October 2022 at the Theaterlab, a theater in Manhattan dedicated to innovative work.

DOMINIQUE CIERI is an award-winning playwright, master teaching artist, Dramatists Guild member, and a two-time recipient of the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation/ New Jersey State Council on the Arts Individual Playwriting Fellowship.
She is a graduate of Rose Bruford College in Kent, England, recipient of the State University of New York Chancellor’s Medal of
Excellence for Scholarship and Creative Activities, and holds an MFA in Creative Writing at
Goddard College, Vermont. Ms. Cieri’s plays have been produced in New Jersey, New York,
Chicago, Los Angeles, Baltimore, and Pennsylvania. Her Essays on Arts and Education have
been published in the New York Times, and Teaching Artist Journal. Dominique taught the
adaptation of nonfiction based on the Holocaust for stage and video adapting 26 plays based on Holocaust survivor stories. The scope of Dominique’s work has touched on a wide variety of populations, including girls and boys at risk in juvenile justice. An inaugural member of the
Women’s Playwrights Circle @ Speranza, 2021-22.

In 2002 The National Organization of Italian American Women published its first and only
cookbook. The cover (right) was designed by Barbara Riotto Garodnick.
Some of the contributers to the book were
Baronessa Zerilli Marimo’s Veal Shank Milanese, five recipes from Matilda Cuomo from Escarole to NY State Apple Tart,
Aileen Riotto Sireys’ Caponatina and her Mom’s Manicotta, Gerry Ferraro’s Easter Pie which she said when eaten "she could hear her arteries harden", Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro’s Just Desserts, and recipes from Lidia Bastianich, Mary Ann Esposito, Hon. Tina Anselmi to name a fee.
There were recipes but as the title implies, there were little personal stories that went with Recipes and Remembrances.
