Spring has Sprung!

Spring is the season of new possibilities, of rebirth and regrowth. And, here at NOIAW, of new friends! Please help us welcome our new members listed towards the bottom of this newsletter.

Happy Passover! Chag Sameach! Buona Pasqua ebraica to all who are celebrating.

Traditionally marked by a dinner, or seder, to recount the story of the Exodus from Egypt, in Italy this special meal is typically concluded with "bocca di dama," a special almond sponge cake!

Buona Pasqua! Happy Easter to all who celebrate.

Marked by services in church as well as family meals, Easter in Italia is often associated with the Colomba - meaning "dove" - a sweet holiday bread.

Our NY members enjoyed an exciting afternoon learning about Sicily’s traditional St. Joseph’s Day altars and the folklore related to the feast. They also made their own bread loaves to take home or to display on a celebratory altar!

Members of the DC Region gathered for a celebration of Women's History Month a presentation by acclaimed author Laura Benedetti of her novel A Country of Paper, which spans three generations of women!

GNY's Night of Shakespeare: Othello

GNY NOIAW members enjoyed a theatrical night of Shakespeare's Othello: The Moor of Venice! New Place Players' new production of Othello at the intimate Casa Clara proved to be a searing look at shame, manipulation and the devastation it provokes.

Thank you to our Florida members for attending "Travels In Italy," which featured vintage photographs from the Tampa Museum of Art’s collection of some of Italy’s most popular cultural draws.

Elisa M. Speranza is the granddaughter of Irish and Italian immigrants, raised Catholic, and educated by nuns. Her first paid job was in the children’s room of her town’s public library, and she was a journalist early in her career before spending thirty-plus years in the water and critical infrastructure business. She serves on the board of the New Orleans Writers Workshop. Her 2022 debut novel The Italian Prisoner was a finalist in the William Faulkner-William Wisdom Writing Competition. A Boston native, Elisa has lived in New Orleans since 2002 and spends summers in Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts.
