NOTICE TO RESIDENTS NEAR THE

OLD DOMINION DRIVE BRIDGE IN MCLEAN

Daytime Demolition to Start On or About February 17;

Overnight Demolition to Start On or About February 20

February 14, 2025

What's Happening?

With the new Old Dominion Drive bridge now open, crews will begin demolishing the old bridge during daytime and overnight hours starting on or about Monday, February 17. Demolition involves hammering, saw cutting and crushing sections of concrete, as well as lifting and removing girders and concrete debris.

Work is planned to proceed in the following sequence:

The retired Old Dominion Drive bridge as it passes over Scott’s Run (February 2025).

1) During daytime hours (7 a.m. to 5 p.m.), starting on or about Monday, February 17 and continuing through approximately Thursday, February 20, crews will demolish the westernmost portions of the bridge that are not above I-495 (Capital Beltway).

2) During overnight hours (11 p.m. to 5 a.m.), starting on or about Thursday, February 20 and continuing into the week of March 3, crews will demolish bridge spans that pass over the Beltway.

Overnight work is necessary for safety reasons because demolition work performed over the Beltway requires the closure of multiple I-495 lanes, which can only be implemented during overnight hours when traffic is lightest.

3) During daytime hours (7 a.m. to 5 p.m.), starting in early March and continuing for approximately three weeks, crews will demolish the easternmost portions of the bridge that are not above the Beltway.

4) During approximately three overnights in late March, crews will demolish the center support pier between northbound and southbound I-495, which necessitates multi-lane closures on the Beltway.

What to Expect:

Residents can expect continued impacts in the area as crews demolish the old bridge. Bridge demolition will involve:

  • Noise from hammers, saws and hydraulic crushers breaking up concrete.
  • Noise from back-up alarms (required for safety reasons).
  • Engine noise from trucks and cranes.
  • Old Dominion Drive periodically will be reduced to a single lane, with flaggers directing traffic in alternating directions.
  • Nighttime only: Light pollution from light towers. To the extent feasible, lights will be directed away from residential areas, but some light pollution is unavoidable.

The 495 NEXT project team appreciates neighbors' patience as this impactful work is performed.
