Distracted driving is the #1 cause of car accidents in the U.S. today. Rain also makes the list, coming in at #5. Car accidents tend to happen more frequently in the rain, as water creates slick and dangerous surfaces for cars, trucks and motorcycles, often causing them to spin out of control or skid while braking. During winter weather, visibility is obscured, and vehicles need more time to stop. Winter weather combined with distracted driving can make for a dangerous combination.
OSHA recommends the following tips to prepare for potential mishaps and prevent vehicular accidents and injuries during the winter months.
- Travel with your cell phone and a charger at all times
- Avoid distracted driving by keeping your cell phone and other mobile devices out of sight when behind the wheel
- Slow down and increase the distance between cars
- Plan out your trip and allow plenty of time
- Keep an eye on the weather – avoid driving in the rain if possible
- Turn your vehicle's headlights on before hitting the road
- Use turn signals whenever applicable
- Create an emergency kit and leave it in your vehicle (umbrella, ice scraper, flashlight, jumper cables, flares, etc.)
- Check your car’s battery, tire tread and windshield wipers regularly
- Clear snow and ice off the outside of your vehicle before driving
- Buckle up and use child safety seats properly
